Place of Birth. Race. Identifiable Markings. Height. Jack scanned over these words for a few seconds before closing the folder, shoving it inside his coat. Making his way to the back door, a thought crossed his mind.
He spun around, once again using his ability to find two more documents. Checking to make sure the correct names were printed on the sheet, he made his way back to the exit. The boy swung the door opening, making sure to slam it shut quite loudly. Sprinting to the car, without using his ability, he threw himself in the passenger seat. Soon after, his red-haired friend burst out of the front doors, running to the driver's seat. He also hurling himself into his seat, turned the key that was resting in the ignition, starting up the vehicle. Mark's foot slammed down on the gas, speeding out of the parking lot as fast as possible.
"Did you get what you needed?" Mark asked after the two had gotten distance between the police station.
"Uh, yeah." The slightly shorter one patted his chest, representing where he shoved the files.
"Nice!" Mark exclaimed as they slowed to a red light. "You know, I felt like a badass doing that."
"I would say." Jack agreed.
Mark cleared his throat loudly, getting Jack to look over at him. The American raised his eyebrows, prodding at his friend to add something on. The other just shot back a confused look.
"Okay, since that's not enough to get you to open up, will you tell me why the hell you stole someone's profile?" Mark exclaimed, hitting his hand lightly on the steering wheel. His actions startled Jack, making him shimmy down into his seat. When the boy didn't say anything for an answer, Mark went again.
"What? You thinking about another plausible lie?"
"Fuck, no, Mark! It's nothin', don't worry 'bout it." Jack retorted, turning his head to look out the window.
His words only made Mark more curious, desperate to get answers out of him.
"You start with gettin' beat up by Felix, not telling me why you got beat up by Felix, then go and steal someones fucking file? How am I supposed to drop that!?" His angered words were left floating in the air as the bright red light flashed green. Mark gritted his teeth as he slammed down on the pedal again, zooming down the road.
"I just can't and won't tell ya! Will you just settle with that until the time is right?" Jack snapped back, trying to hold back his fury.
"I feel like I can't trust you, Jack. I really want to, because I really like you," Mark paused, his voice much more calmer than before. "But you keep hiding shit, starting with you getting beat up. You're always hiding something, I wish you would just tell me." The two pulled into the parking lot.
Jack was, to say, speechless. He hadn't known that the hiding was taking a great deal out of Mark, clearly making him near crazy. When was he going to tell him the truth? When was he going to stop dodging Mark and just fess up? Jack had spent endless time avoiding the truth, avoiding the secret of his life. If he just gave in, just once, would it hurt him? Of course it would, he had seen enough movies. Maybe it was all about time, which Jack had nothing of. He can break the barrier of time, how could this even make a dent? That last thought concluded his questioning.
Mark must have noticed his discomfort, reaching his hand out to place it over Jack's. The small gesture somehow made the younger one relax, slowing his heart to a steady pace and his breath to be less erratic. Mark curled his fingers around his friend's small hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. Jack sighed, following his action. The red-head's mouth stretched into a smile, one that was tender, one that gave Jack a sense of home.
"I'm sorry," Mark whispered, making the statement seem like one that was meant only for the two. "Everything got to my head, this is my fault. I'm sorry. You just worry me so much, and I care for you too much to see you hurt again." The older one took in a deep breath, slowing releasing as his chest fell. Clutching Jack's hand once more, he continued his speech.
"Remember not to far back when I stumbled into the house full of cuts and bruises?" Jack nodded his head. "I remember looking up at you, and the look on your face filled me with unbelievable amounts of guilt. I hate seeing you hurt. I hate looking at your face and seeing you have the need to help me. I just want to look at your face and see a look that says you trust me. And I don't know how long it will be until you do give in, it could be now, or it could be weeks from now. I'll stop bothering you about it if that's what it takes. I'll give you space, time, anything you need. Just know that, okay?" He ran his thumb across the rough skin of Jack's hand.
Jack looked up at Mark, tears forming in his eyes. Blinking once, a single tear rolled down his face. Mark was quick to act, bringing his free hand up to wipe the droplet away. Jack leaned into his touch, a smile forming on his face. The two basked in the moment, their moment. Jack shifted his body, turning it towards Mark. He leaned forward, wrapping his arms loosely around Mark's neck, pulling him for a hug. His much larger arms tugged Jack closer, placing his arms on his lower back.
"We..we should probably go. It's gettin' cold." Jack pulled away from his friend, running his hands from his back to the front of his shoulders. Both of the boys clambered out of the car, walking together to the doors of the college. Jack adjusted his sweatshirt when the worst of all could happen.
The files fell out.
"Here, I'll help." Mark bent down to pick a folder up. Jack looked down at the folder that his friend was about to pick up, a wave of fear coursing through him. The tab on the side of the folder stuck out, reading the text Fischbach, Mark. But it was too late. Mark had already read the name, standing back up to look at his name once again.
"You stole a file on me?" A mix of anger and sadness was laced in his tone, making another wave of fear swim throughout Jack.
"I-I can explai-"
"You don't need to explain anything. I'll settle with psycho or maniac." He shoved the file on Jack's chest, making the smaller boy stumble back. "Take your shitty files and go fuck yourself!" Mark yelled before storming off into the distance, leaving Jack with three folders and a broken heart.
