After Connor soaked my scars with Peroxide, I sent him home, promising to catch him up on the daily drama later, once I got caught up. I allowed myself to sit in the tub for a lot longer than I planned, not ready to be thrown into adult drama once I got down stairs. I threw on some sweats, and a hoodie, before finally descending the staircase. Once Ava saw my image she looked as if she was going to lose it. I now heard my father's voice along with my mother's. I came down and kissed my mother and father's cheek each, before sitting down at one of our bar stools. I lay my head down, ignoring my surroundings.
"Sky, we have been hiding something from you..." My dads hand touches my back and I lift my head. "I'm afraid you'll be mad at us."
"Dad, how could I ever be mad at you?" I smile, not helping his features calm down. Wow, this must be bad.
"Skylar, hunny, we're not your biological parents." My mother comes across the table. Ava just stands looking around our house, with disgust clear as her emotion.
"So, I'm adopted?" I stand up, my dad looking crushed.
"Not exactly...." My mom nearly growls.
"I'm your mother." Ava speaks up.
Her? No. Please!
"I brought you to these two, so you would be raised without looking over your shoulder. When you were born, there were many threats, and as a mother I was fearing your safety." My parents both lower their heads, "The time has come for you to be prepared for the thrown."
"Wait, thrown?" I repeat, almost making me sick.
"Yes, you are the royal Princess of Maatira. It's a little island a ways from here."
"I'm a what?"
"Princess." My dad says, making my knees weak.
"These two have finished their work." Ava speaks up, looking disgusted once more.
"Their work is not finished; it never will be." I look at the two who raised me, bound to stand up for my parents. "They raised me, and taught me. They will always be my parents." Ava is taken aback, I guess not used to authority....
"Sky. You'll have to leave...." My mother whispers.
"Sky is leaving?" Landon's little voice pipes up. I feel my skin bubble, mad at this woman for ruining my family.
"No, Landon-" He dashes off before I can finish, his little feet running up to the second floor. Before going to calm my brother, I shake my head at the lady who handed me over. I continue towards the stairs, hearing my mother crying. I stop before ascending, trying to piece everything together.
"I'll be in contact soon." Ava's voice booms, and I hear her dress as she walks out the door. I travel up the stairs, knowing exactly where Landon would be. The only rooms upstairs are mine and Landon's. Landon always ran to my room when he was scared, or upset. So, as I walk into my room, I look at his form shaped under my bed sheets. I walk over to my window seat, sitting down and looking out to the beautiful scenery below my view.
"You're leaving." Landon pokes his head out.
"No, buddy." I smile as I join him on my bed. He crawls all the way out, laying his head on my lap. "I'm not going anywhere. If I do, it will definitely not be long." I kiss his head, an idea coming to my mind. "Plus, maybe you can come too. If I leave." His excitment after that is contagious, and we both jump up to join our parents downstairs. My mom is still crying, but I never let go of Landon's hand, afraid he'd think something is wrong.
"I'm not mad at you guys. I love you; you raised me. You will never stop being my parents, but I need to know who I am."
"You're Skylar Sanders; you're my daughter." My dad steps forward.
"I know daddy." I embrace my father, his face of fear burnt into my mind.
"Who else would she be?" Landon laughs freely, his young tears vanished by now.
"Your sister is a princess." My mom places her hand on my father's shoulder.
"A princess? Like in those movies sis makes me watch with her?"
"Landon," I turn to him, "you're supposed to keep that to yourself!" I hiss. I turn around, to see my dad tearing up once more. Before I could reach out for him again, he excuses himself from the room, and goes onto the back porch.
"Mom." I lightly smile, her thoughts pointing the same direction as mine when she looks out at my father. I slowly make my way to my dad, not sure how to really approach this man. I've never seen him so emotional....
"You were so small." He whispers, giving me the hint that he heard me join him. I lean on the railing beside him, my eyes trained on his features. "Ava was your moms best friend, until all the glamour and fancy things pulled her in. She was getting threats, mostly because on their island, the eldest daughter takes the thrown. She already had a son, but she was having difficulty getting pregnant. When she did give birth, people were going to extreme lengths to get to, well, you. By that time, we were still heart broken over the fact that we couldn't have any more kids. We never lied to you completely, you are our miracle child, just not biologically ours..." He took a breath, and I held onto his arm. "Ava and Brooke kept getting into arguments about how unsafe it would be for a meeting every once and a while. She was a desperate mother wanting to see her child, I understand that, but she was willing to risk your life. Ava told Brooke to stop sending photos and those little details; like you lost a tooth, or we took off your training wheels."
"So, in other words, she wanted nothing to do with me." I huff, "Lovely."
"Time went by too fast, you reached the age limit to become royalty. Your seventeenth birthday is coming up, and she's taking that as an opportunity."
"Opportunity for what?"
"For you to take her place as queen."
