In the history of nerve racking lunches, this one ranks number one. We got our lunches and went to our usual table. I was talking to Nick about the team meeting. I keep trying to get glimpses of her here and there. Maybe they will talk about whatever they were talking about this morning. Now I'm next to them so I will hear the conversation.
A few minutes went by with no sign of Nicole anywhere. Maybe she forgot about the lunch invite. I hope so. I can make up an excuse and go hide somewhere. The library seems like a perfect place. I don't think that she knows how to get there. She only knows how to get to the janitor's closet.
Now I'm being a hypocrite Not more than a few hours ago I was running through the scenario of being inside that janitor closet with her. I'm a tool. There no other way to describe it. I'm not this guy. I will talk to Nicole, tell her that i have no serious interest in her whatsoever. I need to give her the respect she deserve regardless of what other people say.
I was spacing out playing different scenarios in my head of how to tell her the truth without offending her or hurting her feeling when i heard her voice behind me "Hi Cammy, I was looking all over for you." No, no, no. Sh*t!
I plastered a fake smile on my face and turn around. " Hey, I thought you were going to ditch me."
"I would never do that to you." She tried to make those sexy eyes that girls use when flirting. Girl really, not working with me. I need to find a way to politely get rid of her. After all I'm a gentleman or pretend to be. For the "perfect family" image thing that my dad has talked about every single day.
"Camden remember that you are the future congressman Daniels's son, yada yada yada." My dad gives me the talk on daily basis. I just want to be me, not this preppy perfect teenage boy. I'm not a bad boy or a druggie or an alcoholic guy. But at times it feels like I'm performing a character of a play for the media and the public. I can be cool and good. But no, cool is not perfect in my father's eyes. Oh well, the election will be done with in a few months.
Looking around the table i found the perfect excuse. The table was full. Perfect for my escape. " The table is full, we can meet some other time if you want?" I crossed my fingers under the table. Childish I know but I was desperate. I kept repeating in my head "Please take the bait, please, please please."
No such luck. " I can sit on your lap."
I stopped breathing for a second. Did she really say that? What? Girl, where is your self-respect? Think Camden. I need to get out of this and quick. I holded her hand and look at her with what I call my charming smile.
"Wow Nicole, I would love to take your offer but Nick and I have a very important discussion going on and with you on my lap I won't be able to concentrate, if you know what I mean." I wiggle my eyes at her.
I thought i convinced her there for a second before Nicholas opened his mouth. "Nah it's ok man. We can talk about it later, we still got a few days to come up with something."
That's it! I can't do this anymore. I needed to talk to Nicole. I needed to tell her that wasn't interested in her. I wasn't going to do it here in front of these people. I don't want to humiliate her. After all, it was all my fault and she deserved better. "Alright I think I'm going outside for a while. Care to join me pretty girl?"
"Of course, let's go!"
When I was picking up my things to get out one of the guys made a comment. "Someone wants to get laid!" I heard a few people laughing at the table. I tried to ignore them but for some reason I looked back.
