Chapter Two- School Survival
“Brennnnaaan! Hurry up! We’re going to be late!” I yelled as I drank the last sip of my orange juice.
“Coming!” He yelled back, and after just a few seconds, appeared in the doorway and smiled. “You look nice.”
I blushed, looking down at my outfit, “thanks.”
After much deliberation, I had decided to wear black ripped jeans, combat boots that I had gotten from a garage sale at the start of summer and a blue, sleeveless collared shirt with gold embroidery on the bottom. My long hair was pulled in a French braid and I wore my mom’s lucky ear rings that coincidentally, matched the outfit.
I wasn’t big on makeup, so I only wore lip gloss but I had to admit, I looked better than I would’ve looked last year.
In the previous school year, I was branded as the shortie with dorky glasses and braces. Now, I had better glasses- thanks to Anne- and straight teeth and had grown to be average height, maybe even taller.
I smiled to myself. Huh, Piper, you might even be considered hot, this year.
“You look cute too Bren.” I informed him. “You’ve got the whole ‘I’ve worn this shirt everyday of the summer’ look going on. Hopefully many people won’t realize that you actually have worn this shirt every day of the summer.”
“Well this is my favorite shirt.” Brennan enlightened me.
Bren was wearing a plaid shirt and dark blue faded jeans underneath. It was what Brennan would’ve worn on any typical day.
His shoes were nothing special too, since he didn’t care at all about how he looked.
I was about to make another remark about his choice of clothing but I noticed his priceless smile and forced myself to keep quite.
Besides, his eyes gleamed with approval of me. I couldn’t resist keeping my mouth quiet.
“Come on. We’re late.”
“Sure hot stuff.”
“Get your bag so we can go.” I ordered, “I can’t be late.”
“Anything for you, beautiful.” He praised, still grinning.
“What is up with you?” I asked.
“what do you mean?”
“You haven’t stopped smiling. It’s the first day of school. Usually you’d be miserable.”
“When your girlfriend looks this gorgeous, you can’t help but smile.”
I rolled my eyes. He was crazy.
A few minutes later, we were going down the elevator, into the parking lot of the apartment where we lived.
The area where we lived was nothing special. In fact, it was far from it. There was a small bookstore, a mall a half hour away and a grocery store. The streets were tiny and there was garbage and graffiti everywhere.
Not my ideal setting.
“I can finally ride this thing every day. That’s the one great thing about school.” Bren said as he ran to his prized motorbike.
“You know, along with the fact that we get free education, unlike many other countries in this world!”
I walked slower, my bag was heavy with books and stationary. I grumbled to myself about having back pains because of the books. I knew Bren was too oblivious to carry my bag for me, but I knew if I asked him, he would do it in a heartbeat.
