I sighed and grabbed Caleb from his crib. "Mama!" he wailed for what I think was the fifth time in the last twenty minutes. It was 6:30 in the morning and I was beyond tired.
"You're killing mama." All he did in response was giggle. "You didn't even want anything, little man. No, you just like waking me from my sleep." Sometimes I wondered why I thought I could make a good parent, but that cute little smile made it worthwhile.
I grabbed my phone which had begun ringing, "Hello?"
My mom gasped, "you sound so tired, my little baby."
I nodded and fixed Caleb on to my hip. He laid his head on my shoulder and started with his little baby garbles. "Caleb doesn't know what too early is. I swear he takes like ten naps during the day just so he can wake up at ungodly hours."
She hummed, "you should get Caleb in a daycare program, get him familiarized with other kids and get him used to being away from you."
I made a noise of mistrust, "we've only been together a week, ma. What if he gets scared."
I could practically hear my mom roll her eyes through the phone, "what if he actually likes it, and what if you actually get some real sleep."
Sleep sounded like heaven right about now. "I guess I can give it a try, mom."
She chuckled, "you're making the right decision, son," she paused, "I gotta go help Claire not murder dinner completely tonight. After you get Caleb into daycare you should come over for dinner, the rest of the family would love to meet the next little Rivera."
I shrugged, "sure thing mom, but you gotta come with me so I can get the best one for my little Caleb."
She made a noise of agreement. "Okay, bye, I love you.""Love you more." I ended the call and looked over at Caleb who was sound asleep gripping softly on to the fabric of my shirt and letting out soft little snores. I climbed into my bed with him still in my arms.
We slept until about noon. My mom came bursting into the house which caused a naturally cranky after sleep Caleb even more cranky. Along with her yelling my name, Caleb was screeching in my ear. I slid out of bed and picked him up. After a few seconds of rocking he was silent as a lamb.
"There are my babies!" She kissed our cheeks and smiled. "I found the best daycare around. You can keep Caleb there during your work hours and they even have in home service if you need someone to watch Caleb here while you enjoy a night out."
I nodded slowly, "nice people? nice kids? nice aura?"
She grinned, "only one way to find out!"
[...]
It was a pretty nice place, I guess. Caleb really seemed to like it and he loved all the pretty colors and abundance of toys.
"I think this will do, mom." She smiled at me and nodded at the lady. We took a seat on one of the benches and waited for her to return with the paperwork. I sighed loudly, "you think this is really good for him?"
My mom nodded, "I always kept you home because I really had nothing I needed to do, also because you were a big cry baby." She leaned down to Caleb and cooed, "your mama was a big cry baby."
Caleb squealed, "mama!"
I rolled my eyes, "now he wants me to pick him up, mom. It's going to take ages to get him back after I take him out." I unbuckled and pulled Caleb out so that he could rest on my lap.
"Daddy, look! It's the man with the phone!" A kid walked over pointing at me. "He has a kid just like you!" A face that seemed extremely familiar came into view.
"Emmett what are you-" he paused, "oh."
I gasped, "oh you're the guy I bumped into the other day...sorry about that." He waved it off but his eyes soon traveled down to Caleb. I sighed at the sight of him once again trying to eat his own hand, "this is Caleb, he's my doorstep baby."
He furrowed his eyebrows, "that actually happens?"
I nodded, "my thoughts exactly."
We both laughed for a while until that kid, I'm assuming Emmett, pulled his dad's hand as the universal sign to hurry up. "Hey, if your Caleb is going to be here we may see each other sometimes."
I nodded, "yeah." We both shared a wave.
My mom raised and eyebrow and laughed at me, "somebody's got a crush." I shook my head at her childishness.
"Let's go get those paper's signed." I tried to be serious, but my mom was a child at heart and kept making childish jokes about us being "meant for each other" The guy probably has a wife for god's sakes.
