"If he's cute and has a cute kid, why didn't you ask him out?" My closest friend, Miranda, lectured. I rolled my eyes and sipped the coffee that had just arrived to our table.
I gave her a short shrug, "I gotta worry about Emmett, and who knows if he's in a relationship or not?"
She scoffed and rolled her eyes at me, "a man shows up with his mother to put a baby he found on his doorstep in the most expensive daycare around, and you think he's got a significant other? If that isn't that dumbest thing, the I don't know what is, mate."
"Look, Miranda," I sighed, "I just don't know if I'm ready." She shook her head at my lame excuse and sipped her coffee with an extremely judgemental look.
"Lilly and I have been together for about ten years of our lives," She reached over and caressed my arm, "I just want that for you, angel face."
I shook my head and laughed, "How would Emmett take the whole dating thing? He already hates it when I go to work, I don't have room for dating."
Miranda gave a small grin, "Emmett, honey?"
Emmett glanced up from devouring the ice cream for the first time since it had reached the table. "Yes, auntie Mir-Mir?"
"Wouldn't you like to have a brother? A little brother you could protect and have fun with?" Emmett's entire face lit up. He nodded eagerly and glanced at me excitedly. I groaned and shot a quick glare over to Miranda.
"Or you can have another bowl of ice cream!" I say with a goofy smile hoping that he'll forget about Miranda's annoying parasite of a thought.
He crossed his arms defiantly, "I want both!"
I rolled my eyes and sighed, "fine. Ice cream now, brother...later."
He clapped his hands together and smiled happily at me. Right when I called for the waitress my attention was drawn to the coffee shop's door.
"Claire, you cannot hold my child." That guy from the daycare shook his head and continued to push the stroller towards the counter. A very beautiful woman who resembled him extremely close came in after him with a huff.
She placed her hands on her hips and muttered something that looked to be foul language. Emmett seem to catch sight because he practically flew out of the seat in into the legs of the man. I groaned and fought the urge to hide my face.
Miranda looked back and smirked, "is that the hottie?"
I nodded, "yes. Don't do anything I wouldn't let you."
He reluctantly left the stroller with the girl and walked Emmett back over to our table, "package for a Mr..."
I cracked a small smile, "Peter, Peter Grant."
He nodded, "I'm Jayson. Jay, to friends and close strangers." I loved the playful aura he always had around him, minus that first time. My glance shifted back to the girl who looked strikingly similar to him. He let out a small 'oh' and rolled his eyes, "that's my annoying kid sister."
I nodded, "this is Miranda, old best friend," I motioned to the short blonde who simply grinned up at Jay, "and this is Emmett."
Jay chuckled, "we've met."
Emmett let out a small giggle, "daddy, he's really funny!"
I nodded. He opened his mouth to speak again, but was called away by his sister who was holding two coffee in her hand and kept a loose grip on the baby stroller.
Jay placed one hand on his hip and the other massaging his temples, "Claire Aloe Rivera, if you drop coffee on my kid, I swear to everything holy, I will throw you in the trash."
They continued their small bicker outside of the door, and all I did was watch closely, and probably like a weirdo, as he left.
"Miranda?" I spoke.
"Yes?" She raised her eyebrow smugly.
"I think I'm ready."
