Chapter 13

"You're going to have to go up there eventually, Phoebe.  Do you really think Coach isn't going to notice you?" Lydia asked, glancing as me as I tried to disappear behind Stiles' much taller frame.

I bit my lip anxiously, glancing over Stiles' shoulder at the large wall towering above all of us.  I yelped when Lydia unexpectedly yanked me from behind him and forced me to stand next to her. "It's not that bad." Stiles said, bouncing around in excitement.

Right after he said that, Allison kicked Scott from the wall, causing him to fall.  I covered my mouth to stop a scream as he neared the ground, only to stop a couple inches short.  I turned and glared at Stiles. "That was terrifying!  I could―I could die!"

"You're not going to die, Phoebe." Stiles said. "Besides, if you fell your harness would stop you from hitting the ground."

"Not helping."

"Alright, next two.  MacGregor, Daehler, you're up." Coach yelled as he stood from his crouched position next to Scott.  I froze, not expecting to have to go so soon.  Lydia pushed me forward softly, giving me an encouraging smile.  I sighed and stepped onto the mat in front of the wall, taking hold of the harness next to Matt and trying to put it on.  I had gotten my legs in, but I couldn't figure out how to secure it.

"Need help?" I heard from next to me and glanced up from my harness to Matt.

I nodded sheepishly. "Yeah, I don't really know how this works."

He came forward and took ahold of two of the clasps, clipping them together before tugging on them.  I stumbled forward towards him from the force of it and grasped his biceps to steady myself. "Sorry.  Is that tight enough?" He asked.  I looked up at him and nodded.

I let go of his arm and he slipped his hands from the clasps on my harness.  I glanced back at Stiles and the others as I faced the wall and became increasingly more nervous as Stiles wasn't even paying attention.  He was looking off to the side with a strange expression, his arms crossed and his foot tapping on the ground.  I took a deep breath and stepped up to the wall, grasping two of the pegs and stepping off the ground when coach blew his whistle.  I tried evening my breathing, but when I was about halfway up the wall my foot slipped and I looked down.

Bad idea.

I began to pant in fear as I saw just how high I was and snapped my head back to the wall, screwing my eyes shut and trying to even my breaths.  I opened my eyes when I calmed down and moved again, trying to catch up with Matt.  I was almost there when, once again, I slipped.  This time, however, it was my hand.  My eyes widened as I fumbled for the wall, trying my best to grab back on before I fell.  Just as my body began to lean back in a frightening decent to the ground, Matt's hand reached out and grabbed mine.

I glanced up at him and sighed in relief, giving him a nod of appreciation.  My heartbeat slowed as I grabbed the rock again and hoisted myself up next to him at the top of the wall. "Thanks."

"No problem.  You going to have trouble getting down?" He asked.

I sucked in a breath in annoyance, hating how much of a wuss I was being.  I pushed off the wall and made my descent to the ground in an attempt to regain my pride.  I stuck my tongue out at Matt who watched me with amusement.

Once my feet were firmly on the ground, I turned around and cheered, throwing my arms into the air. "I won!" I turned at the sound of another pair of feet hitting the ground and smiled at Matt with my arms still in the air. "I won!"

I smiled and he smiled back, shaking his head as he began to take his harness off.  I dropped my hands quickly and fumbled with the clasps, dropping the harness and stepping out of it before running over to Stiles.
