Chapter 18

I paced the hall as I waited for the boys to come out.  The Sheriff had taken them into another room, Jackson's dad and Melissa, who had arrived a little over 10 minutes ago, going in as well.  The Sheriff had asked me to stay in the hall as they all went in, just before he told me that Jackson had already cleared me of having anything to do with this escapade.  I had tried to convince him otherwise, not wanting the boys to take the blame, but he wouldn't have it.  Apparently, it just wasn't possible for me to do something like that.

What did that even mean?

I was a nervous wreck, glancing down the hall every time I passed it to see if it was over.  There was only one positive thing that came from this, and that was the time it gave me to mull over what Allison had told us over the phone just before they got called in.  She had told us that one single word had been wrong in Morrell's translation—friend.  A kanima doesn't seek a friend, they seek a master.  In other words, someone hasn't been helping Jackson this entire time, they've been controlling him.

The sound of the door opening made me stop my pacing and shoot down the hall where I passed Scott and his mom.  I entered the room and stopped next to Stiles glancing between the stare down him and his dad were having. "Hey, um, I don't mean to interrupt, but I kind of told Ms. Martin I was staying the night.  I don't really want her worrying about any of this so..."

"Yeah, sure." The Sheriff sighed before yanking Stiles by the back of his jacket and over to the corner of the room.  I guess he thought I couldn't hear them, but I most definitely could. "Remember what I said last time?  It's still in effect.  If I find out you've done anything, and I mean anything I swear you'll be—"

Stiles yanked out of his hold and glanced over at me as I waved slightly, trying to look like I wasn't listening in.  He looked back at his dad. "Dad, she doesn't even like—" He cut himself off with a sigh. "I wouldn't do anything, okay?  So just leave it, please."

I smiled over at the Sheriff as Stiles walked towards me and expected him to tow me away like he usually does, but he just walked past and out into the hall.  I watched in confusion before giving the Sheriff a small smile and turning to follow Stiles out.

"Fine, no TV," Melissa said, and I glanced over Stiles shoulder to see her and Scott.  The teen wolf glanced at us over her shoulder, and I couldn't help the look of guilt that crossed my face.  If only I could have taken some of the blame.

He pursed his lips, looking back towards his mom. "My TV's broken, remember?"

"Then no computer!" She scoffed in a strange tone, one I hadn't heard before.  Was this what it was like to be told off by your mother?  Even though it was extremely difficult to watch, I couldn't help but yearn for something like it.  Was my mother out there, wishing for the same thing?  Probably not.

"I need the computer for school."

"Then no, uh..." She looked back at Stiles and I. "Then no Stiles—or Phoebe!"  While I wasn't hurt that I was being used as a punishment, I knew it simply couldn't work.  I moved out from behind Stiles as he spoke.

"Wha—no Stiles?" He protested loudly, moving forward a bit.  I sighed and ran a hand through my hair.

Melissa didn't even glance back at us. "No Stiles!"  I jumped along with Stiles as she rose her voice, Stiles backing away until he was standing next to me again.  I moved forward then, standing next to Scott's mom.

"Um, I don't mean to cause trouble, but I promised to help Scott study for his exams." I said, trying to not upset her.

She steeled her face and looked over at Scott. "Fine, but only for studying—and no more car privileges.  Give me your keys." Scott hesitated. "Give them to me!"
