Chapter 17

Although Ms. McCall had said an eight o'clock appointment would give me extra sleep, it was quite the contrary.  I walked into the hospital groggily, having not slept in over a day.  It was five minutes to eight and I had only made it because of Scott's werewolf speed.

We had gotten our hands on a police transport vehicle and parked it in the preserve, chaining Jackson inside and leaving Stiles to keep watch.  Scott needed to go to school and I had my appointment so until I was done he was all on his own.  I didn't know how he'd manage.  All I could do was hope this appointment wouldn't take long so I could get back out there and help with our sort of, well, extremely illegal kidnapping.

Ms. Martin was in the waiting room and she stood when I arrived, waltzing over and taking me by the arm. "I've already checked you in." She said, guiding me past the front desk and down the hall.

"How long have you been waiting, I tried getting here as soon as possible but Stiles was taking forever." I lied through my teeth. I had told her the previous night I'd be staying with Stiles', which wasn't a complete lie.  I was with Stiles all night, just not at his house as I had implied. We were just lucky the Sheriff wasn't home or we'd be screwed.

She opened one of the doors in the hall and held it for me. "Oh, not too long honey. I got here about ten minutes ago."

I sighed in relief, glad to know it hadn't been too long. I took a seat on the exam table as she closed the door and suddenly became nervous. I tried not to think too hard about what my results would be, but something Ms. McCall had said kept coming to mind.

"There are some things that Doctor Mallory would like to discuss with you in person."

That meant she couldn't tell me over the phone, right? Which meant it wasn't good.

"And please, try to make it to this one. It's important."

Important was not a positive word either. Oh God, what if I was dying? The door creaked open and my head shot up. I watched as Doctor Mallory walked in, a slim laptop in her hand. She smiled brightly at me before turning to Ms. Martin who stood from the seat next to me. She set the laptop down on the desk in the room and stuck a hand out to her.

"Doctor Mallory. You must be Ms. Martin. It's good to meet you." She said as they shook hands.

Ms. Martin gave her a kind smile and put a hand on my shoulder. "Likewise. I feel terrible for missing her earlier appointment, but I'm here now. I hope everything turned out fine?" She asked.

I watched the doctor's expression, trying to gauge how bad it was. Her smile slipped slightly and she glanced at the laptop swiftly. Not good.

"I wish I could say, but this one is very...unique." She said, trying to ease any nerves by giving me a gentle smile.

I didn't have it in me to smile back so I just folded my hands in my lap and bit the inside of my cheek. She stepped over to the table, taking a seat in the chair and opening the laptop. It flashed to the password screen and she quickly put it in, the screen flashing to her home page. She finally stood and placed the laptop on the bed where it could be seen by both myself and Ms. Martin. I stared at the brain scan in perplexity.

Ms. Martin sat back down in her seat slowly, glancing from the image to Doctor Mallory. "What does it mean?"

"Well, almost everything seems to be fine, excellent in fact." She responded before pointing to part of the brain. "But these two sections, called the-"

"Supramarginal gyrus." I interrupted from within my own thoughts, only to look up at Doctor Mallory in embarrassment.

"Spot on.  In most cases dealing with this area, it is because it is hindered. It can cause numbness or paralysis and hinders the empathetic response in such a way that one wouldn't even be able to understand emotion.  We see it a lot in Asperger's patients." She said and I moved away from the screen.
