"Are you okay?" Grayson asks through my phone. As soon as I got to my room, I Facetimed Grayson. How could I not, though? My mom was talking crap about him, and she didn't even know the full story. I sigh.
"Not really," I answer. "I am so sorry that my mom treated you like that. She normally is a really nice person to my friends. At least, she was before the move."
"It's fine, really. I'm just sorry that this caused so much trouble for you," Grayson says, scratching the back of his neck.
"It's not fine," I tell him. "My mom didn't even acknowledge you the entire time that you were there. That was so rude of her!"
"Cara, calm down," Grayson laughs. "It's not like she was going to like me for long anyways. That officer that was at your door hates me and my brother with an absolute passion. Word would have gotten out and she would have hated me anyways."
"That bothers me so much. The officer treated you so bad too," I shake my head. "I'm starting to hate this town more than I thought I would. In Florida, no one was this rude."
"Don't worry about it. But I just want to warn you, that you are going to get hated for hanging out with me. You might think that I'm kidding, but I'm not. Everyone is going to come to you and bully you until you stop hanging out with me," Grayson warns. "So if you ever want to stop talking to me, then I understand completely..."
I interrupt him. "Grayson, you're cool, but man you are so dumb at times. I'm not going to let people bully me out of talking to you. That's so stupid. I mean, now I know what it's like to have very few friends."
"You get used to it. But really, you should think about hanging out with me. It would make your life a whole lot easier," Grayson says.
"Life wasn't meant to be easy," I tell him. "Life was meant to be full of surprise, anger, happiness, doubt, love and a whole bunch of things in between. No matter how hard you try, you're not getting rid of me that easily."
"You're so cute," Grayson laughs. I blush. What the heck feels? "Do you want to hang out tomorrow after school as well, or would that push it even more with your mom?"
"Well, I wouldn't care if my mom hated it. She hates a lot of the things that I do. And I would definitely hang out with you, but I'm grounded for two weeks," I tell him. "And I'm not exactly sneaky enough to sneak out of my house."
"That's too bad," Grayson sighs. In the background, I hear a door slam shut. "Hey bro, what's wrong?"
"I just got pulled over by Officer Dave for going the speed limit!" I hear a voice exclaim. Ethan. "We need to leave. I'm tired of living here, where everyone hates us. It's getting old, really quick."
"Bro, calm down," Grayson sighs, looking at me. "I'll talk to you later, Cara." Before Grayson hangs up, I hear Ethan yell louder.
"And I really can't believe you are still letting that girl closer to you. She's going to hurt you too, and don't come crying to me when she does!" he exclaims. Grayson offers me a look of sympathy and finally ends the call.
I know it's weird, but after hearing what Grayson has told me today, I feel really bad for Ethan. Being hated by everyone except your family and one other person must really suck. Being somewhat famous might not help with all of that either. Grayson and Ethan both must be so stressed out.
I decide that I should call my best friend from home, Hannah. She's the kind of person that'll help me with the whole Grayson/my mom situation.
"Hey, girl!" I exclaim as soon as she picks up. Hannah gasps and starts squealing as loud as she can. "Well, it's not like I needed that ear drum or anything."
