I walk out of the house with Gerry, as usual. We meet up with Alan at the giant oak tree, as usual. Emma joins us as we walk by her house, as usual. But when we reach the school, it's in chaos. All in the yard and parking lot are angry parents, holding signs that say Mothers against busing!
The buses drive by, slowly, as to not hit anyone. We walk around the crowd to get to the front of the school, where Alan's girlfriend makes a big show after not seeing him for two whole weeks!
"Oh ALan! It's been so long!" she says giddily.
"It's been so long!" I say, quietly mocking her.
Emma and Gerry giggle a little.
Elizabeth makes a big show of kissing Alan, right next to me. I give Emma a "help me" face, and she giggles again. SHe shares my hatred for Elizabeth McGuire.
When she finally pulls away, I comment. "Have you swallowed him yet?"
Alan laughs, but Elizabeth gives me a hate face.
"I'm sorry, I just missed my boyfriend" she says. "Where's yours?"
My smile fades.
"That's right. You don't have one!" she says. "I'll give you credit, I don't know how you managed to keep your petite frame after playing tackle football with a bunch of guys for so long. YOu'd think you'd be all fat and muscular by now."
"At least she didn't call me fat." I say to Emma.
Elizabeth squeals angrily and pushes me, before running inside the school.
Alan follows after her.
"Someone's jealous." Emma says, poking my arm.
"Jealous of what?" I ask.
"You like Alan." she says playfully.
Gerry grabs me by my arms. "Caroline, is this true."
"Woah, woah" I say, backing up. "First of all, what makes you so sure?" I ask Emma. "Second of all, why would I tell you?" I ask Gerry.
"I can sense these things." Emma says.
I roll my eyes. Luckily, I'm saved by Louis and Petey, who call me over.
"Man, this stuff is messed up." I say. gesturing to all the protesters.
"Yeah, anything serious happen, they shut the school down and our whole season goes down the drain." says Petey.
"This here's real messed up." comments Louis.
"But there are a lot of pretty women here." comments Petey. Luis nods in agreement.
I roll my eyes and walk over to where Sunshine is pushing his way past angry parents and schoolkids alike. "Hey, we don't need you here either, hippie boy." says one kid.
"Leave him alone, Alex." I say, clearing the crowd a bit for Sunshine to get through.
"Camp over now, huh." he says to me.
"I guess." I reply. The bell rings, and all the students clear into the school, and the angry parents leave.
~
The bell rings, and I clear out of class. I walk over to my locker to put away my stuff for the day. Elizabeth walks up behind me and taps me on the shoulder.
"Listen, Carrie." She hisses. I raise my eyebrows in a "what?" gesture, doing my best to be nice to her.
"Look, I don't know what the heck happened down at camp, but you need to back off." she says.
"Back off of what?" I ask.
"Alan." she says, as if it were obvious.
"When did I pull forwards?" i ask in confusion.
"I don't know. But if you did, back off now. I'm warning you." she says.
"Okay." I shrug. I open my locker and start putting my stuff away.
She looks me over real quick, then kicks my shin.
"Ow!" I exclain, partially because Iwasn't expecting it, and partiallybecause she wore those little pointy shoes.
She grabs my hair, and I spin around, so she slams into a locker, effectively loosening her grip on me.
I shut my locker, and she tries to punch me (very badly, I should add), but she trips and falls onto the floor. I help her up, (because I'm still trying to be nice), but then she grabs my arm and slams it against her knee.
"Ah!" I exclaim in pain. The school is mostly cleared out now.
"Elizabeth!" exclaims Alan from behind her.
She whirls around.
"Caroline attacked me!" she squeals.
I scoff, trying to hide how much my arm hurts. "Of course I did." I say sarcastically.
Alan yanks Elizabeth away from me. He says a few hushed words to her and she stomps her foot in frustration. She slaps him and walks off. She yanks a paper out of her binder and throws it at him, then leaves.
He runs over and checks my arm. "I don't think it' broken, but you should go to the nurse."
"It's not broken." I assure him. "I know what a broken arm feels like. It'll stop hurting this bad in a little bit."
"I don't know why she did that." he says, shaking his head. He picks up the wad of paper he threw down. "I broke up with her, by the way."
"Oh" I say. His eyes widen and he shows me the paper. Written all over it is Alan Bosley. Alan Bosley. Alan Bosley. There are little drawings of stick people gettin gmarried, and little facts about Alan, like, "puts his left sock on, then his left shoe, then his right sock, then his left shoe."
"How creepy is this?" I ask. "Wait, you eat spaghetti with a fork and a spoon?"
"It's practical, okay?" he asks. He tries to take it out of my hands, but I hold it up over my head. Then I remember that he's taller than me and can reach it. When he reaches for it, though, I back up, into a table, and lean back, making it harder for him to grab. He leans over me, trying to grab it, but looks down, and our faces are less than an inch apart. We freeze, not knowing whether or not to back up.
"Caroline!" I hear Gerry calling down one of the hallways.
I hand Alan the paper. "I'm coming!" I yell after him. I open my locker back up and shove the rest of my stuff inside. We race down the hallway, until we run into him.
"What took so long?" he asks.
"Elizabeth attacked me." I say.
"But Caroline fought her off." says Alan.
"And ALan broke up with her." I say.
"And she threw this at us." finishes Alan. He hands Gerry and Emma the paper, and they laugh as they read over it.
"Oh. My. God." says Emma, giggling.
