It was the end of Summer when the Maitlin family and Hudsons co-hosted a end of summer barbeque at the pool. It was loads fun. Young, desperate teenagers flirting with everybody they see; adults were enjoying the sun and some beer and hotdogs; and as for Mason and Lauren, they spent half of it singing every song they knew, from slutty teenaged anthems to romantic duet serenades.

After that last song, there were still an hour left in the party, so they decided to take a dip in the pool like old times. Or, until Mason shoved Lauren in the water and she cussed him out and it was a fight to the death in the water.

But they would always love each other, have that special connection.

It has only been three weeks since that whole fiasco, and nearly everybody changed one way or another. Mr and Mrs Hudson respected and started liking Lauren as a person; Zoey Maitlin started dating a respectful, well-moraled lawer and stopped drinking wine in general; Mason was seeing a psycharitist three days a week for his depression and anxiety and recieved many anti-depressants and pills and was on the road to recovery; and Lauren, well, she wasn't afraid anymore. All of her horrible childhood memories, the abduction, the time she died, she learned to make fun of them. She was also more confident. Ever since she sang that song with Mason that first time, her self-esteem boosted a good 60 percent, and she was proud of that number.

After the party, the parents picked up while  Mason and Lauren ran off to feed the ducks at the apartment complex's duck pond.

"It's been a crazy summer." Lauren said, shaking her head. "And I'm going into eighth grade... fuck."

He laughed as he tossed a stone into the pond. "It's nothing compared to high school, I promise." She giggled. "Anyway," he continued, sitting next to her. "It was crazy since I met you. I mean, if I didn't I'd be dead sooner." He kissed her cheek and said, "Thanks for always being there for me."

She looked at her finger at the ring. "Of course, anything for you."

They ended the summer perfectly, by each others side. It was perfect.
