The next day was pre-occupied with cleaning up the mess that was our Glade. Buildings were trashed, gardens trampled, debris everywhere.

The Grievers came earlier than they had last night, wrecking all our hard work, erasing it in a few fell minutes. They took a boy I didn't know.

After the attack, exhausted, I slept the soundest since I had entered the Glade. Minho told me why the next morning, after checking the fresh 9 on my arm. "The Walls didn't move last night, the Doors didn't close, nothing," he said. "The Maze is done changing."

"We need to check if something's opened up," I said, starting to rise from my breakfast.

"Not so fast," he chuckled, gently pushing me back down. "You're hurt. No way Newtie's letting you out there."

"We need five more people if you count me out," I said.

"Don't worry. We're covered. I got Chuck and some other shanks to volunteer. It was pretty easy after last night."

"Talk to Newt. Go! Now!" I pushed him toward the blonde boy, who looked haggard and tired.

Minho grabbed my shoulder. "You're coming with me. It was your idea."

We sat opposite Newt. He didn't look up. "Why do I have the feeling you two are up to no good?" he asked.

Minho shot me a meaningful look. "Newt," I said. "You heard the Walls didn't move last night. We need to get out there and search, and Minho's found enough volunteers for us to reinstate the Runners."

"No."

"Newt, what are we supposed to do? Die here? You've seen my tattoo. Do you really think they'll let us live?"

Minho leaned forward. "Thomas and I can train 'em lickety split. They're a smart bunch. We can have them Running independently by tomorrow."

"Newt," I whispered. "What other choice do we have?"

He looked up, resigned. "Fine. But Hope--" I paused, halfway standing up. "You can't run. Not with your arm." I started to protest. "Tomorrow maybe. But not today."

I nodded and followed Minho across the Glade. He gathered the recruits, and I listened to his lecture, Thomas standing next to him. He detailed the supplies needed, and how to use them. "I'll be taking half of you to show you what we do to map the Maze and keep our way, and Thomas will be taking the other half. Tomorrow, Teresa, you'll take Hope out and show her the ropes since she can't run today."

Teresa looked back and managed a weak smile, tears still staining her face. She hadn't wiped them away from when she heard Gally was gone.

He took them to get supplies, then they stretched and ran through the Doors.

I watched them leave, praying they'd come back safely.
