The next day Teresa and I stood at the Door, stretching. I was jittery, nervous. What if I wasn't cut out to be a Runner?

She smiled reassuringly. "You'll be fine."

We shared a tentative grin, setting off into the twisting, turning tunnels. She showed me how to cut vines and mark the turns in her little notebook. After a while, I said, "Teresa, I'm sorry Gally's gone."

She jerked a little, then sniffed. "Yeah, people keep saying that. It makes me wonder how many of them actually are upset he's gone, and how many of them are upset that I'm upset. Most people don't like him," she laughed, wiping her nose, "but if you got to know him, there was a soft interior underneath, you know?"

"No, but I'll take your word for it." We both laughed. She hacked down some vines, a little more violently than usual.

"This whole situation sucks," she huffed. "Thomas and Minho and Gally were all fighting over me, like I'm some kind of object. I swear, it was like a war. And they want me to choose?" She was incredulous. "How do I just choose, when I'll just make the other two hate me and whoever I pick? Thomas is super sweet and kind, Minho's funny, Gally is protective. How do I pick? They're each amazing!"

Hope, you're nearing the exit, the Chancellor whispered suddenly in my mind as Teresa ranted on. Brace yourself.

"And it just hurts to know that they can't get along. What am I supposed to do?"

We turned the corner and skidded to a halt in front of the Cliff. "Oh yeah, this is the Cliff I was telling you about," she said dismissively. "Seriously though--" she turned around a froze. Right in front of us was a Griever.

It charged.

I jumped and tackled Teresa out of the way. The Griever went plunging past us and vanished.

She gaped. "Did you see that?"

I picked up rocks and started throwing them over the edge. One by one they fell until at last I hit the spot and they disappeared.

Teresa grabbed my arm. "There! Right there!"

I pointed at her notebook. "Draw it!" I exclaimed. "We can't forget where it is!"

"Keep throwing!"

I found more rocks and threw and threw and threw as Teresa drew frantically, tongue poking between her teeth in concentration.

"Okay. I'm done. Let's go!"

We made it back to the Glade in record time.
