Newt freed his fingers from mine, kissing me on the forehead before hustling everyone through the Flat Trans. After an agonizing five minutes, he and Thomas were the last ones to go. They held a brief whispered conversation, wracking me with the worry that Newt might stay behind.

Chancellor? I called again, bile rising in my throat. What if she wasn't here? What if she was betraying me? Chancellor, where are you? Chancellor!

Newt looked over his shoulder at me one more time before disappearing through the portal.

Chancellor! I was screaming, thrashing against my invisible bonds, trying to free my body from WICKED's tyrannical grasp. Chancellor, you two-faced, double-crossing scum—

Go! Her shout cut off my mental tirade.

I strained harder, but I couldn't move. I can't move!

Thomas walked through the Flat Trans. My eyes were trained on the portal, but no matter how hard I fought I couldn't move.

Are you kidding me? How terrible that I was going to be defeated by my own body. What the hell do you think you're doing, Chancellor? Get me free now!

Every second thundered by in time to the blood roaring in my ears. The Chancellor swore. Hold on Hope, almost there—

It's Lynn! I screamed, frustration boiling over.

Go! She yelled again, and WICKED's hold snapped, sending my straining muscles sprawling on the floor. As I struggled to get up, she urged me forward. The portal's only open for another thirty seconds! Go! Go! Go!

I sprinted across the slick floor, heart pounding in my throat, and dove through the Flat Trans.
