Chapter 8:

‘As lies go, this one is beautiful

I know that I've been a fool for you’

The next day, I woke finding a message from Gale on my phone. He simply said ‘Call me’ I took a shower and a change of clothes and finally, I called him.

“Hey Catnip” he answered.

“Hey Hawthorne. You wanted me to call?” I asked, running a hand through my damp hair.

“Yeah. I wanted to invite you down at the cabin”

“Are you going there?”

“Me my mom and the kids are here. I was wondering if you wanted to join us? Since it’s just an hour from the Capitol”

“I’m not in the Capitol Gale” I said.

“Where are you?” he asked.

“New York” I bit my lip.

“Why are you up there?” “Felt like it. And Peeta invited me to go with him”

“Mellark?”

“Exactly” “Wow… So how is your trip?”

“Good. I’m having fun” I smiled, recalling the past days.

“That’s great Catnip” he said, sounding disappointed.

“But I could come down there if you want”

“Are you sure?”

“Positive. Besides I think I’ve seen enough of the city” I added.

“I’ll see you in a day then”

“Bye Gale” I said just as he hung up.

“Hey can we leave?” I asked Peeta.

“Sure. Where do you want to go?” he asked.

“Actually back to the Capitol. Is that fine?” He looked wary but nodded anyway.

“It’s fine. I’ll arrange the bill” he said before picking up the phone.

I started gathering my things, which weren’t much and put on my boots. I waited for Peeta to pack his own things.

I ate the left over fruits from the other day. I guess this is breakfast.

“Ready?” Peeta asks, grabbing a few berries from the plate.

“Yeah” I followed him out the door and down the elevator and back in the car.

“I thought you wanted to see another show?” Peeta broke the silence in the car.

“I changed my mind” I replied.

“Because?”

“Gale called”

“Oh” “And he wanted to meet up with me in his family’s cabin. It’s a few hours away from the Capitol”

“And how do you plan to get there?” he asked.

“I’ll call Gale” I countered

“You don’t have to. I’ll drive you down there” he said without looking at me.

“Thank you Peet” I said.

“It’s fine” he sighed.

“Are you fine?” I asked.

“Yeah. I feel great” there was a bitter edge to his tone.

“If you say so. Tell me when you want to switch” I said.

“Where’s the place?” he broke the silence after 15 minutes.

“One hour away from the university. It’s in the forest. A cabin” I said.

“You know the way there?” I asked.

“Of course” he said as he pulled over.

“Why’d we stop?” I asked.

“Can you hand me the map?” This was the only time he sounded like his usual self. It stunned me for a second before moving to give him the map.

He drew out a pencil and traced a route.

“What’s that for?” “A shortcut of some sort. I don’t know why I never thought of looking for one” he shrugged, returning the pencil.

And once again, we were back on the road. I expected this trip to be better. More relaxed. But it’s silent. Maybe too much that it’s killing me.

A few more minutes and I broke it. “Peeta what’s wrong? Did I do something? If I did well I’m-“ “No. you didn’t do anything” he cut me off, his tone softer than his previous one.

“It’s nothing. Don’t worry about it”

“You’re leaving something out” I pointed out.

“If it’s me then just say so. I wouldn’t mind you being honest with me” “Katniss” he finally looks me in the eye.

“it’s nothing you did. This is all me. Don’t worry okay?”

I couldn’t do anything but nod.
