Run Away With Me (Hunger Games)

Prologue:

The day was bright and warm. A typical day for a break, and a long one at that. Katniss Everdeen knew that she’d be spending it alone. Prim and her mom were too far away, and she had no money for that kind of trip.

Katniss felt lucky enough to be given a scholarship at The Capitol University. She was now on her third year of studying Botany.

She checked her calendar and it read Wednesday, the day where she usually joined Gale in the student café called The Hob with his friends.

After putting on clothes, she jogged to the café, only to find none of them in there. Then it hit her. Gale mentioned the other day that he’d be visiting his family. Now she was alone.

He is usually the only person who talks to her, him or his friends occasionally. He usually hangs with Clove, Cato, Marvel, Glimmer, Annie, Finnick, Johanna and Peeta. At least, that’s what she thought their names were.

She took a coffee and sat in a chair near the window, opening her book. Her thoughts were swimming. She read the same page twice now. She tried to concentrate on reading but failed to do so.

“Hey Catnip right?” Peeta’s voice made her look up from her novel.

“It’s Katniss” she replies, gripping the book tighter.

“Sorry. I just heard Gale call you that a lot. And when he mentions you, he uses that name” he says and awkward silence followed.

After a minute, she decided to speak again.

“Are you going to tell me why you’re here?”

“Right…I was wondering if you’d like to join me” he says.

“Join you where?” Katniss raised an eyebrow.

“A road trip” he answers.

She didn’t answer him. Peeta continued to explain.

“My parents are calling me back home, inviting me over. And they’ve notified the school. Now they’ve banned me here for the break. The only option I could think of was a road trip and I don’t think it’s a good idea to go alone” he shrugs at this point.

“Why are you asking me?” suspicion lined her tone.

“All my friends are off doing God knows what. And you’re the only person I know who’s available” he explains again.

“I have work” Katniss tried to avoid his offer.

“You do know the bookstore is closed for the break right?” he cut through the obstacle.

“I don’t have money for the trip” she continues to resist.

“I’ll pay for everything” he once again, succeeds.

“If I did go with you, where are we going?” she asks this now.

“Wherever. We can decide along the way” he suggests.

“I don’t have anywhere in mind, I just want to avoid my parents. Maybe you wanted to go somewhere?” he continues.

“Sorry to tell you I have no idea where to go” I say sheepishly.

“But you’ll go with me” he says.

He knew her answer before she even says so.

“When do we leave?” her words sealed the deal.

“Tomorrow. Meet me at the parking lot at around 7 in the morning”  he says, finally letting out a smile.

Katniss’ face remained unsure but Peeta can tell it was slowly leaving. A small faint smile graced her face. He saw her in a completely different light now.

“Tomorrow then” she replies and leaves to pack.
