Chapter 13:
'I'm miles from where you are
I lay down on the cold ground
And I pray that something picks me up
And sets me down in your warm arms'I talked to Annie at around 7:30 in the morning. Now, it was 4:30 in the afternoon. I was no longer in the Capitol. I wasn’t in the forests. I was in the city that never sleeps. I was back in New York. The temperature was cooler but the sun was still out high. I stood in front of the café we were in no more than 2 days ago.
As I passed by, I looked at the window for any sign of him. Yet there was none. My phone’s battery was wasted with me calling him all night and all day. It didn’t make sense.
I should’ve known.
I should’ve noticed
I was oblivious as Gale said. I was oblivious and I hate myself for it. I feel like the world is mocking me. He disappears exactly when I was sure. He does so when I have something to say.
It was hard to admit but I memorized his number after looking at it all day. I brought the payphone to my ear and started a call. Once again, my call was directed to voice mail.
‘Hey it’s Peeta. Just leave a message and I’ll try to get back to you’
I sighed in defeat and frustration. I came here by choice. I came here because I knew he’d be here. I thought I knew, it turns out, I was wrong. I dared myself to return to the hotel and ask if he’s come back here. I was greeted with the usual cold glare and answer. I walked out disappointed, not with them but with myself.
Stupid.
You’re so stupid.
I took the trip to Times Square. I stayed at a spot where I could see almost everyone in the area. Blonde heads were everywhere, making it difficult for me to search. It was easy to get lost if you knew the place but so hard to look when you don’t.
Another subway trip later, my wallet was getting lighter. I needed to find him soon or I’ll be stuck here. Each step was heavy. The pavement was filled with crowds of people. I reached the entrance and gave no time admiring the view. Trees lined the place and so did grass. I approached the tree, Our tree, and found no one around. And that was when I sat down on the grass. I leaned on the tree, feeling the cool wind. My eyes were closed. Peeta, where are you?
“Why are you here?” a voice said.
My eyes jolted open and I looked from left to right, looking for whoever spoke. Then, I looked up. His familiar blue eyes were there. He was sat on a branch, leaning on the trunk.
“Looking for you” I said.
“You found me” he replied, looking away.
Now what?
“’I’m sorry” I said “I told you it’s-“ “I have something to say” We both spoke at the same time.
“Go ahead” he nodded.
I swallowed the lump in my throat, feeling the butterflies fluttering in my stomach. “Do you know why I came here?” I asked.
“I think I do but I’m not so sure” he leaned back on the trunk.
“Oh would you just come down here?” I said. He smiled wryly before doing so. “I’m down” he said, taking a seat beside me.
“I missed you” I leaned on him.
He chuckles. “It’s been what, a day?” he asks. “Aww she admits she misses me”
“Shut up” I shove him playfully.
“Okay now what?”
“We have classes tomorrow” I suddenly blurted out.
Stupid, I scolded myself for the –nth time today.
“That’s it?” I saw a flash of disappointment flicker in his face before he hid it, again. I shrugged, not knowing what else to do.
“Let’s just leave. Please?” I asked, my voice softer.
“If it worries you that much, sure. Let’s go” he got up and pulled me along with him.
We walked back to the parking lot in silence. I spent it asking myself why I didn’t say it.
A/N: SORRY! please don't be mad :(( I know I've been gone for a month ( *im crying now*) I was busy :D And yeah, not a good enough excuse right? Anyway.. I'll update the next chapter soon. I'll just finish my homework. xxx
