Chapter 3
Reaching the last roof we can jump to before the highway, we stop and look around. In front of us is a long straight stretch of road leading to farmland.
"This is our stop." I state. "Now, to find a way down..."
"Well, isn't this tree convenient?" I hear Aurora say from the other side of the roof.
"Huh?" I crawl over to where she is and spot said tree. It certainly was convenient. Branches thick enough to support both of us reached from the top of the tree to the very bottom. We climb down the tree and walk over to the road. Multiple cars can be seen all abandoned or crashed.
"Makes you wonder what happened to them." I say as we walk past a car flipped on its side.
"What do you think? The gas." Aurora says from next to me. I roll my eyes and look towards the sky. The sun, by this point, is already high in the sky.
"We should probably move faster if we want to reach the mountains before sundown." I say over my shoulder.
"You're probably right. Well, let's go then." And with those words she takes off at a jog with me at her heels.
We stopped when we reached the base of the mountain, around dusk.
"I... really need... to get into shape." I say between pants. Aurora, who recovered much quicker than I did, rolls her eyes and looks around.
"We need to find somewhere to stay for the night. There's a house off in that direction." I look up and follow where she's pointing. A small, one level farmhouse with a large lawn in front can be seen at the base of the mountain not too far ahead of us. "Not perfect, but it'll work, right?" I nod and stand up fully.
"Well, let us be off! But can we just walk? Please?" I question, making sure to do my best puppy eyes. She laughs at my response but smiles and nods anyway.
"Sure." We head off with the sun dipping behind the house in the distance.
"Isn't that pretty?" Aurora says. She stops for a moment to admire the view while I keep walking slowly.
"It sure is. Better admire it while you... can..." I trail off when I hear a click from where I just stepped. I move my foot back and spot a metallic button of sorts.
"Uh... Auro-" I am unable to finish as a large explosion sounds from the house and I am flown backwards. Fire and debris is thrown everywhere. I look back to Aurora to see her flat on the ground with several deep wounds due to the flying debris and burns covering her body. Another explosion sounds from the direction of the house and I look back only to see a large chunk of metal make contact with my body. My eyes flutter closed as I have one last thought.
'What a stupid way to die.'
The End
Just kidding!
We arrive at the house with little trouble. The front door was locked (for some reason) so we split up to look for another way in. I was coming around the back of the house when I heard Aurora call for me.
"Hey Luna! I think I found a way in!" I head in the direction of her voice and spot her standing below a slightly open window. "You think you could give me a boost?" I huff, and answer in a joking manner.
