Chapter 10
Jordan and I decided to take the back roads we used a few days ago as a precaution. We drove in complete silence, as if one word would send the world against us. Maybe it would've.
After we drove past the pier, I tapped Jordan's arm. "Hey, there's a grocery store over there." He looked where I was pointing, and pulled over. I got out, and stood on the top of the Jeep for a better view.
"See anything? Or anyone, I guess."
I slowly spun around one last time before hopping off. "No, it seems fine." He nodded, and we walked inside. There were a few isles knocked out of place and some of the refrigeration units had the glass smashed, both other than that the building seemed untouched. We decided to split the isles evenly, and Jordan went to find supplies from the front of the store while I went to the back. Unfolding a cloth bag I had in my back pocket, I began scouring the shelves and deciding what was useful or not.
"Let's see... chips? Sure. Beef strips? Why not. Gum? Definitely. Soup? Heck yeah! Bacon scented.... toilet paper? What?" Some of the products that I found made no sense whatsoever. I finished going through my section of the store, and turned around. As I did, something caught my eye. 'I never saw that door before.'
I walked up to the door and turned the knob. I creaked open, revealing a giant freezer. From the ceiling hung skinned animals and various cuts of meat. 'I guess the butcher never finished his shift.' I continued to walk around, each step increasing how uneasy I felt. At the end of the hall was another door, seemingly leading outside. Suddenly, something black flashed in front of my eyes.
"What the he-" I cut myself short when I realized what the flash was. It was a spider. I facepalmed myself, and kept moving towards the door. I reached out to the handle, and pulled. Nothing. 'Maybe it's frozen. If I ram it, then the ice might break.' I backed up and forced my weight onto the door. It opened with ease, and I fell on my back, hitting my head on the concrete floor. I sat up, and a moan sounded in the air. But it wasn't me. I snapped my head to my left, and about fifteen zombies piled in the corner stared back. There was a solid five seconds of staring until both parties realized what was happening. I dashed out the door, and I could hear them chasing me. I raced through the freezer area, pushing racks of meat down behind me in an attempt to slow them down. Apparently zombies are as agile as a fricken' cat, because they leapt right over each obstacle. I hauled open the door to the storefront, and screamed.
"Jordan!" As I continued to run, I saw his head pop up from behind an isle.
"What's wro- oh crap! Run!"
"Start the car!" I screeched. I bolted down the refrigeration section. I saw a pack of bacon on the floor, and inspiration struck. 'They may be able to jump, but can they dodge?' I sprinted even faster, then stopped to grab the pack of bacon. Spinning around, I chucked it at the following horde.
I watched it sail through the air. "I choose you, Baconchu!" Using my dwindling energy reserves, I pushed through the front door only to slam right into Jordan's back, and fall to the ground. I looked up and saw five zombies surrounding us, plus the fifteen rushing from behind. We were trapped.
BANG! The zombie closest to Jordan dropped dead. Well, dead again. BANG! BANG! The glass behind me shattered and the leading infected fell to the ground, tripping up three others. Jordan took the cue and resumed fighting, but I just sat on the ground. Whoever was helping us had amazing aim. A figure lunged down from a nearby roof and landed between Jordan and I. She was slim and tall with fair skin, and had dyed light blue hair with a dirty blonde at the roots. I watched as she took out a black revolver and began shooting the small horde that was still inside the store. Gunshots still sounded from some invisible location, and the pack was diminishing. Finally, there was nothing but a pile of dead corpses.
