Chapter 8
I sat in the car, waiting. Today was the day that we were going to head into L.A for supplies. Jordan and Aurora decided that they needed to do some last minute things before we head out, though. I'm not gonna lie, I am absolutely terrified right now. This is going to be the first time we've headed into such a large city, most likely packed with zombies. One of the Jeep's doors open, breaking me out of my thoughts. Jordan plops himself down in the seat next to me, otherwise known as the drivers seat.
"Is Aurora almost done in there?"
"I'm pretty sure. She was messing with her shoes when I walked out." I nod and slump down in the seat with eyes closed. Minutes later, my door opened.
"Wha...? Luna, I thought I get shotgun!" I open my eyes and turn to her.
"Not this time. You took too long." She huffs and turns to get in the back, closing my door in the process. She gets in the back and Jordan turns to face the both of us.
"We got everything?" Aurora and I nod after checking our persons for weapons and then we were off. After driving only a few miles, we began to see infected wandering around by the roads. It was one at first, then more and more as we kept driving closer. Despite the noise made by the Jeep, they ignored us. Either they somehow knew we were too fast to catch so long as we were in a vehicle, or were caught off guard that living people were passing them.
Eventually, we pulled onto a highway. All around us was crashed cars, some flipped, others with smashed windows. Jordan slowed down when we reached a crash blocking the road. We stopped and examined the scene in front of us. A large pickup truck was crossing all lanes with it's side caved in from a car that had plowed straight into it. A rotting arm could be seen sticking out of the truck's driver side window.
"Gross... Are we going to have to move this?" I ask, turning to Jordan.
"We are." He responds. I sigh and get out of the Jeep with my hand on my axe. I hear another door close behind me and look back to spot Jordan making his way to the truck, but no Aurora. I check the area around us once before turning and opening Aurora's door. I spot her digging through her pack.
"What are you doing?" I ask while leaning on the edge of the door. She jumps and faces me.
"I was... making sure I had my extra knives." I raise an eyebrow at this and nod slowly.
"Alright... We're probably going to need your help up here so finish up quickly alright?" She nods and I turn to head back to Jordan. We stand there and wait for Aurora. When we've gathered, we walk over to the crash. "Alright," I begin. "What's the plan?"
Jordan scratched the back of his neck. "Well, it's a choice between clearing a way around the cars, or finding keys and driving them out of the way." I looked at the fallen telephone poles and broken tree branches littering the highway.
"It might be easier to just drive them out of our path. It would take a long time to chop or move all the branches and such." I turn back to Aurora and Jordan and watch them nod in agreement.
"In that case we should look for some keys. I'll search the truck." Aurora states before walking over to the truck.
"I guess that means we're searching the car then." Jordan says as we watch Aurora walk away.
"I guess it does." I walk over to the trunk and pop it open using my axe. A water bottle, some granola bars... Not much, other than that. The car has obviously been looted before. I make my way to the front of the car and stop by the passenger door.
