Chapter 11
I woke up to rapid banging on my door, again. I moaned and rolled over. Straight off the bed. Muffled laughter makes its way in from the other side of the door.
I sighed, then walked over and opened the door. "What?"
Jordan and Aurora stood in the hallway, completely dressed. Jordan handed me a slightly crumpled piece of paper. "I figured out the message that had been constantly playing on the radio."
"What? When?"
"One million and seventy-three years ago." He laughed. "When do you think? This morning!"
I stiffened. "Why didn't you wake me up sooner?"
Aurora snickered. "Because you sleep like a rock. That, and he figured it out at three in the morning."
"Oh, well then... Thank you for not waking me up." I open the paper and read aloud what it says.
'We mke cur... Plz snd halp... 123 Bull St., Colorado.'
I looked up at Jordan. "Um... they have great spelling."
"Uh... I guess my translation is a bit off."
"You don't say!" We all laughed. A silence settled among us. "So... what do we do?" Aurora bit her lip. Obviously they hadn't thought so far ahead.
"Well," Jordan paused to smack away a fruit fly buzzing near his face. "I guess we need to figure that out."
My stomach rumbled audibly. "Um... after food." They both nodded, and went downstairs. I went back into my room to change. I put on my yellow tank top with a cross-strap backing, light blue jeans, and sneakers. I quickly braided my hair, and walked downstairs. I headed towards the kitchen to see Aurora in the middle of making pancakes. I grabbed a bottle of water, and sat on the counter. I felt something tap my neck, and I looked over my shoulder to see a bloodied face.
"Boo!" I screamed and fell off the counter, which jump scared Aurora, and suddenly there was pancake batter all over the floor. And my face.
Laughter sounded from above. I looked up to see Jordan holding the mask, laughing his head off. "O-oh my g-god!" He kept laughing as he ducked down to avoid the whisk I chucked at him.
"Joooordaaaan!" Aurora moaned. "First of all, damn you. Second, you ruined the pancakes!"
I snickered. "#JordanDidIt" Despite the fact that two of the three of us were still covered in pancake batter, we howled with laughter. I sniffled and wiped the tears forming at the corner of my eyes, and picked up the mask. It was an elderly man's face, with pale skin and red eyes, with his mouth sewn shut. All over his face was scratches and scars, and blood ran from them. "Well, that wasn't creepy at all." Aurora snickered at my comment while Jordan just smiled. I grinned back and I started to clean up the floor, while Aurora started to make another batch, that hopefully won't go air-and-floor borne, while Jordan went back downstairs to work with the radio thing again.
About half an hour later, we were situated around the kitchen island, with fresh pancakes. "Alright," I started. "What's the plan?"
"To actually eat the pancakes." Aurora answered. I facepalmed.
"No duh. I meant about the message." I bit into a pancake, opening the floor to debate.
"Well, it depends on what we want to do." Jordan states. "Do we want to play it safe and focus on survival, or if we want to take a chance and pursue this alleged 'cure' that the person, or persons, was talking about." We were silent for a few moments, each in thought. The thing is, I don't know what I'd rather do. The idea of a cure sounds amazing, but would I risk my life, and those of my friends, just to get it? Not to mention the fact that it might not work. At the same time, am I content to just run, hide, and scavenge for the remainder of my life, constantly scared of dying, or losing the people I care about? My whole life, I'd been the type of girl to bow her head and stay in my own shadow. Take no risks and risk nothing, at the expense of my own happiness. Always listen and never talk, at the expense of my own voice. Always follow and never lead, at the expense of my own independence. Do I really want things to stay that way?
"No." I whispered.
Aurora looked at me. "No what?"
I shook my head. "I think we should follow the message and go after the cure." Jordan started tapping his chin in thought, and Aurora stared out the window and began playing with a bit of her hair.
She looked back to me. "Are you sure?"
I nodded. "I am. I think I'd rather die trying to help than die alone, knowing I spent all my time running."
Jordan stood up. "When you put it that way, then it really is a no-brainer." He paused. "Pardon the pun."
I raised an eyebrow at Aurora. She let out a breathy laugh. "I guess we're doing this." I put my hand on the table in between us, and Aurora put hers on mine. Jordan leaned over and placed his hand on hers, completing the stack. 'I guess we are.'
