Chapter 6

I wanted to throw up. I backed away, dizzy. It was the most revolting thing I'd ever seen. There was blood on the walls, and scratches longer than a meter each on the walls and floors. Her parents were lying dead on the queen-sized bed, ripped to shreds. It was obvious that zombies had gotten in, yet this was no target. Targets were bitten to infect, but maulings such as this was for a feast.

Aurora still stood stock-still in the doorway. There was no tears, no sound, no movement, no emotion. All she seemed able to do was breath, blink, and stare. She was stone. I rested my hand on her shoulder and turned her away. Wordlessly, we walked downstairs and climbed into the car, this time with myself in the front and her in the back. Jordan couldn't even get one word out before he noticed my somber expression and shut his mouth. 'Smart man.'

We drove off in complete silence. No one had any idea where we were going, but right now anywhere but here was perfect. After a while, we had to stop for gas. Since no one was there to stop us, it was free. I ran in and grabbed some supplies, which was really only a bunch of food. I made sure to grab Smarties. I popped back into the car and threw the box beside Aurora. I know she loves Smarties, but this time I got no response. Once he was done filling up the jeep, Jordan got back in.

     "So." He said.

     "So." I answered.

     "Now what?"

I sighed. "I don't know. There's nowhere left to go for us. Anywhere you'd like to go?"

"There's really no point in sight-seeing anymore." I wasn't sure if he was attempting humor, but it didn't work either way. We sat for a while more, just thinking. After a few more minutes, he spoke again. "What about finding a permanent place? Like a base to live in?"

"Makes sense. We can't hold everything in the jeep forever. Any idea where?"

He furrowed his brow in thought. "Depends what kind of place we're looking for."

I groaned. "I have no idea. Oh, wait."

     "What?"

"What about L.A? You know the area, it should have a decent radio transmission, and there's a lot of water in case we need to escape by boat."

Jordan started up the car and turned around, heading south. "Los Angeles, California it is then."

We drove for a few days, taking turns driving, and only stopping to use bathrooms, change clothing, or to get more food. Had there been traffic it surely would've taken much longer, but I guess that's just one of the few advantages to the near end of humanity. No rush hour. Another bright side to it was that those of us still learning to drive didn't have to worry about crashing into anyone or following laws. Not that I did any driving myself, since my ankle was still injured. Only Jordan and Aurora drove, taking turns as the other slept in the back seat. The only sounds was from various CDs that we had collected from Jordan's car, and the one I had grabbed from Aurora's mom's car before we left. Even in an apocalypse, it was too perfect of an opportunity to pass up playing the Beach Boys in California. Or on the way, at least. Finally, after a little more than a week, we arrived at the border into California.

Jordan yawned and stretched from where he was lying in the backseat. Aurora pulled over to the side of the road and stretched herself.
