Chapter 7One of the zombies grabbed my good ankle, and I screeched. Using my other foot, I kicked it square in the eye and wrenched my foot away. There wasn't enough room to fight two of them in here, so I fled down the stairs. They crashed after me, occasionally tripping over their own feet. Jordan must have heard my screaming, because he ran to the base of the staircase, knife out. I hit the base of the staircase and whipped my axe from my belt loop. Losing it's footing, the zombie in front toppled to the bottom of the stairs, where I promptly slammed my axe down on it's head, splitting it's skull and killing it instantly. The second was somehow smart enough and jumped over the railing to where Jordan was waiting and prepared. He stabbed it between the eyes and held it back and arm's length, keeping it away from him and giving me enough time to retrieve my axe from the first one. Once I had, I swung my axe with all my remaining strength and caught it in the side of the head, breaking it's scalp. I hit it again, and it dropped dead. Well, more dead than it was before.
Jordan pulled his knife from the zombie and rubbed the blood off on his shorts. "Well. That was eventful."
"Yeah," I panted. "No kidding. That's my scare for the month."
"For the month? Better call off the surprise party then." He chuckled. His smile dropped. "Have you seen Aurora?"
My adrenaline picked up again. "No, I haven't." Jordan and I turned and raced down the basement stairs. My foot touched the bottom and I turned the corner, only to find her with a set of headphones on, staring at an odd-looking computer and fiddling with buttons. I sighed, walked up, and ripped them off her head.
She squealed. "Hey!" Aurora looked us over, noticing the new presence of blood. "What happened to you guys?"
"Zombie attack. And where were you? On Youtube?"
Jordan smirked, and Aurora shook her head vigorously. "Do you really think that Youtube is a priority right now? This isn't even a normal computer!"
I stood still and stared at the screen as Jordan walked over and nudged her chair aside, sending her flying across the room, since apparently the chair had wheels. He started fiddling with buttons and pressing certain letters on the keyboard. Finally, he turned to us. "I know what this is. It's a type of silent radio messaging system. By entering certain commands, you can specify what transmission you want to go on, and then it turns on the machine beside it."He pointed to a small device beside the machine. Aurora wheeled over and joined me as I stared at the black box. It looked like a regular CD/radio player, but it had two giant wheels on each side, and bunch of knobs and dials, alongside buttons that seemed to be labelled in binary. Jordan continued explaining. "Once you've set the stations you want, then there should be a microphone somewhere that you can simply speak into, and everyone on the line will hear you." He turned to Aurora. "You had the headphones on. Did you hear anyone."
She shook her head. "Nothing but this awfully loud static."
I thought back to the master bedroom. "There were a bunch of technical books in the master room upstairs, if you need them." He nodded.
Aurora and I looked out the window. "Speaking of which," she started. "It's getting late. We should go claim bedrooms or something. Jordan, you should take the master with all the books." I was slightly disappointed that I couldn't claim the large room, but I simply shook the feeling away and followed Aurora upstairs. Big surprise, she took the lilac one. 'I guess that means I get the tan room.' I heard Aurora's door close as I walked into my room. I closed the door and walked straight to the bed where I fell face first into the pillows. Not even bothering to take off my shoes, I fall into darkness.
