Carl woke up groaning. His head throbbed in pain and his neck felt crooked from sleeping in an awkward position.
"Who the hell opened the goddamn curtains" he yelled instantly regretting it as he covered his ears. He groaned again heavily forcing himself up to get to the bathroom only to realise it wasn't where it usually was.
"What the fu-" only then did he realise he wasn't at home but in a very familiar house. Hearing shuffling in the living room he headed there to see none other than Avery holding her head in her hands on the sofa.
"Do you feel sick again or something?" she asked groggily rubbing her eyes. Carl stood there, unsure if he was dreaming. Still not believing where he was. Ava looked at him and sighed. Getting up and going into the kitchen only to emerge again with a glass of water and some pills. He took it without a word and drowned it in the second before following Ava to the sofa and sitting next to her.
"What happened?" He asked. Only remembering the party last night - but none of the events. He looked at Ava with deep bags and a tired look on her face.
"Go to sleep Carl. We'll talk in the morning." she dismissed. At first he didn't move. But then he lay down on the sofa, pulling Ava down too and holding her in his embrace. She thankfully didn't pull away but instead buried her head into his chest and closed her eyes too tired to do anything else. Some time later Carl could feel her soft even breathing and followed soon after in her knocked out state.
The morning came quickly and Carl woke up to a yawning Ava and an alarm clock in the bedroom. She swore, getting up and switching off the clock. Carl watched her - finally taking in her appearance. She looked thinner and more tired - as if she never got any sleep. Her skin more pale and her physique limp. Carl got up - following her to the bathroom where she was brushing her teeth. He was surprised to see his toothbrush still in the small cup above the sink.
Not saying a word he took it and brushed his teeth standing behind Ava who barely noticed his presence. She was THAT tired. Ava spat out the fluoride and rinsed her face before heading to the kitchen to make breakfast. Carl followed and watched her butter two slices of toast and hand it to him - about to leave the kitchen when a hand grabbed her wrist.
"You're not going to eat?" Carl questioned disliking how thin and pale she'd gotten.
"Work" she said pulling her hand away and disappearing into the room. She reappeared minutes later with the target uniform - hair in a simple pony but still looking tired.
"So what... What happened? Last night?"
"You were drunk out of your mind. I'm going now - go back to your hideout before I get back. I don't even know why I helped you out."
The words stung deep in Carl but he simply nodded as he watched her go. What had he done to her?
