Vanessa's point of view

"Hey," Alejandra said and I hummed. "It's poetry month, so the school has the last open mic night this thursday. How about we go see what it's like in there?" She asked and I shrugged.

"I'm not a poetry person really but sure." I said and nodded. "Is anyone you know signing up?"

"A few friends, that's all." She said and I nodded. "They're going to be singing a song, god they're terrible."

"That's not nice-"

"No, it's a joke song. They know it's bad. It's just for the shits and giggles." She said and I nodded. "They're good singers but a good voice is nothing without good lyrics."

"Words to live by." I said, wondering why it felt wrong when I passed Miranda by. She was sitting at a table alone with her guitar and I felt kind of bad just passing her up without a hi.

"I need to find something to wear for the thing, the uh, open mic night shit." She said and I laughed. "Maybe I'll wear white jeans since that's poetic."

"I guess." I said and nodded. "I'll put together something last minute, I don't know." I said and she nodded.

"Can I ask a favor?" She asked me and I nodded. "Okay, so prom is coming up, Riley has a friend and he's not really looking to date, but he wants to go to prom and not be a loser. Think you could go with him?"

"Oh um..." I said and she looked at me. "Can I meet the guy?" I asked and she nodded.

"That's actually where we're going. Come on." She said and I put my hands in my pockets as I chewed on the inside of my cheek.

"Yeah man, I think I'm going with a su-Alejandra, babe, who's this?" I heard someone say. They wore a all black with a flannel and a pair of black glasses that were similar to mine.

"I'm Vanessa, a friend of hers." I said and we shook hands. "Pleasure." I told them and they nodded.

"I'm Riley, that's Keath." They said and I shook his hand, giving him a small smile. He gave me an awkward one and I looked at Alejandra.

"Isn't prom for seniors?"

"This year it's seniors and juniors, next year it's seniors and sophomores, then seniors and freshmen." She said and I nodded, saying that was actually kind of cool.

"I'll see if I'm free." I told Keath and he nodded, looking down awkwardly as he shuffled his feet. "You play Legend Of Zelda?"

"Grew up on it." He said and nodded. "Why?" He asked and I reached under my shirt, showing him my necklace. "Oh..."

"It's for power because I'm the only one who's in control of myself." I said and they all looked at me. "What?"

"Dude, deep." Alejandra said and I laughed. "Keath actually has a necklace like that too!" She said and I looked at him.

"It's wisdom because I'm a little bitch." He said as he scratched the back of his neck. "I'm not powerful nor am I courageous."

"He talks me out of doing illegal stuff by being smart. He's actually very helpful and always uses his head." Riley said and I smiled as I nodded.

"Can I ask you a question?" Keath asked and I nodded. "Are you by any chance um going to that open mic night on thursday?" He asked and I nodded.

"Alejandra and I were just talking about it actually. We were going to go. It's at six right?" He nodded as Riley talked to Alejandra and I chuckled.

"Are you like a creative arts fan? Art, music, writing..." He listed as he moved his bangs from his face.

"Music is actually my everything. Without music, I'd be dead. You?" I asked and he chuckled. "You seem like a writing and music kind of boy."
