Ominous
The medical team rushes in with an African-American man who seems pretty young. Twenty-five maybe? His bullet ridden body lays, what seems to be, lifeless on the stretcher. Everything that seems to be pure on that stretcher is stained red.The doctors and nurses converse quickly. Short phrases could only be caught such as "losing blood" and "blood transfusion" or "surgery". What a lose. Another black brother lost to the battle of the streets maybe?
The doors of the ER are pushed open again, but this time with a young black woman. Hair tousled and body at rest.
"Just get the bullets out and make sure she's calm when it's over." The doctor says while they rush her down through the next set of doors.
Those two seem strangely connected. In another area of the hospital, a female nurse holds a sleeping baby boy in her arms.
"He can't even be a month old," she says to her nurse colleagues.
"He isn't. The mother gave birth to him like three weeks ago." A nurse replies while touching the baby's small hands.
"Are they...dead?" The nurse who hold the newborn asks.
Some nurses shrug while others mumble their uncertainty. Another nurse takes the child from the nurse's arm.
"This poor baby. We don't even know his name," she sighs as she sets the helpless child in a crib.
"All we know is that we're in charge of that baby until this is settled. DCF will be coming soon." The head nurse states.
The nurse who held the child first peers into the crib.
"I'd take the little guy if I could," she begins
The nurses look at her in bewilderment.
"I mean, if the parents don't make it....."
"We want them to make it," the head nurse says with the raise of her voice.
The nurse nods in embarrassment and follows the nurses out the nursery.
Liberty
My parents named me Liberty because I was their first child when they came to America. They knew that I'd be free to become whatever I want in this new country so they named me something hopeful.I feel someone lightly putting pressure on my arm. My eyes pop open and I'm staring at a woman in hospital uniform.
"Who are you?" I croak.
She looks up at me in surprise the smiles.
"I'm your nurse. I'm just changing you dressing... How are you feeling?" She asks.
I sit there in confusion as I try to recall why I'm here. I feel okay. My throat hurts a bit.
"I'm fine. My throat hurts a little," I say.
"I'll get you something for that as soon as I'm done. I'll tell your doctor that you're awake," she says while bending over to look at my wrapped up leg.
"What happened to me? Where's my child and my fiancé?" I begin to ask.
She hesitates a little as she peals back the wrapping.
"Um, well... I don't know much about what happened except that you and your fiancé were victims of a shooting." She says softly.
I close my eyes and try to remember. It rushes back to me. Trey and I walking up the city hall steps. The gunshots and Trey shouting at me to stay down. His body splayed on the floor. My bottom lip begins to tremble.
"He's dead, isn't he." I state with tears coming down my face.
She looks back at me with a sad smile. Before she could reply, the doctor walks in.
"You're awake!" He says overly cheerful.
