SURPRISE UPDATE! Enjoy you lovely people
Chapter 15
"Calum? It's me, could you open the door?" Luke spoke into the receiver. After a few long seconds, the door clicked and buzzed, and he opened it heading up to the third floor.
The apartment complex was slightly run down – the walls were painted cream but were beginning to peel slightly near the ceiling and bits of mould were hidden by framed paintings and photos. There were mail boxes lining the corridor, each with a lock that turned and a slot for a key. Mali had said they lived in apartment number 9, so without further ado he hurried up the stairs.
Once Calum had heard a knock, he tentatively opened the door, still in his sweats and a black vest. Luke smiled empathetically at him and asked how he was, dumping his bag of snacks on the ground so he could take off his Vans. He also took a moment to admire how his pectorals stood out in the tight vest he was in – usually he wore baggy clothing so they couldn't be seen.
"I'm fine. You didn't need to come."
"What do you mean? You've missed so much school, I need to come and teach you everything!"
"I'm not some kid."
Things were getting awkward. Luke now had to find a way of getting out of this situation. "Ahaha... well you can't pass your exams if –"
"Seriously, I think exams are the least I should be worrying about right now," he interrupted, slightly peeved. "I could be going to prison for all I know."
With a short sigh, Luke made his way into the living room and sat down on the sofa, Calum following him but reluctant to let him stay. "My mum always tells me this saying... 'If you don't live in the moment, you might be gone tomorrow and you'll realise you never made the most of your life. You were given a shot to live, to see the beauty of our world – whether that's beauty in the landscape or beauty in everyday moments.' I've lived by her saying for my whole life; that's how I stay so happy and unstressed," he said hopefully, looking up into Calum's blackish eyes whose shine had gone. "I don't like seeing you like this, Calum. You must remember; you're never alone in this world, however alone you may feel. You must also remember – there are some people in this world who like being alone, but there is no one in this world who can bear being alone."
Calum's eyes widened as he listened to Luke's words. He sounded so inspiring, so real, and for a moment Calum could see some light shining down on him from above. This light was lost when Luke shook his head and stood. "W-wait... where are you going?"
Luke sighed. "It's obvious I'm not welcome here. I'll see you soon."
Calum looked sadly at him, afraid and angry at himself for chasing him away. How could he have been so mean? The poor guy just wanted to stay and help, that wasn't much to ask surely? "No wait... please could you stay? I mean... erm... it's just..."
He smiled. "I wasn't intending on going anyway. Here, let me get my bag and we can play a game on the sofa."
Now Calum was relieved but still angry that Luke had been so sneaky as to make him feel so awful. Yet he couldn't stay mad for long because he was hiding the fact that he was extremely happy to see the blonde again, and his lovely smile.
Luke returned with a pack of cards and began teaching Calum how to play Go Fish as Calum had no idea what the symbols on the cards even meant – it was an easy one to get started on and soon they were playing cheerfully and laughter filled what was once a silent room. At one point, the heating got turned off so they sat a little closer and wrapped blankets around their bodies to stay warm – it almost felt like they were camping and Calum was brought back to a childhood camping trip with his parents and Mali. It was painful to think about but at the same time, nice to reminisce on.
"You hungry? I brought some food with me," Luke said after probably the 40th game. Calum nodded and laid down, resting his head on the sofa arm, staring at the plain white ceiling and lightbulb. Luke came back in with his backpack, pouring the contents onto the space between them and letting Calum choose whatever he wanted. He then got his phone out and played some music to lighten up the mood.
The first song that came on was a good bit of All Time Low. Luke hummed the guitar parts that he'd learnt before, and his fingers tapped the end of his chocolate bar. "I know this song," Calum whispered, also beginning to hum along. "They left us alone, the kids in the dark... to burn out forever, or light up a spark..."
Luke raised his head with a smile forming. He couldn't believe it. Calum fucking Hood was singing. He was finally able to hear his voice... and it was absolutely beautiful. Thing is, it wasn't high-pitched and clear – but it was clean, low, smooth, lyrical with a touch of huskiness... everything he loved in a singer. He hadn't heard Calum up so close before, as the only other time was when he was stood outside the music room listening in.
He immediately wanted to sing along with him – harmonise, sing together and enjoy being in one another's company. So he did.
Calum was a bit surprised but got over it upon seeing the smile on Luke's face – it gave him courage to sing a bit louder. Inside, the thought of Luke hearing his voice drove him on and before they knew it they were singing a duet to 'Kids in the Dark'. Their heart beats neither slowed down or stayed the same during that time; they sped up in excitement at the new discovery.
It got to the point where Luke couldn't hold it back anymore. As the song reached the end, he leant forward with slightly pouty lips, and pressed them against Calum's parted ones.
