Alex stayed there, on his knees, at the back of the boat, looking into the water to see the gruesome remains of his fallen teammate. He felt a hand on his shoulder, and he looked up to see it was Darwin. "It's alright now. We're safe. We're on the boat, and we have our tickets."
Alex nodded, still frozen in place with shock. Darwin patted Alex's shoulder, and walked away to the rest of the group, who all stared in terror at what had happened to Claire.
"ALRIGHT! Listen up laddies." A large Irishman who appeared to be the captain waltzed out of his cabin area and adressed the crowd. "I know it was a mad rush to get on the boat, and we understand it was the only way to stay alive. Those of you without a ticket will be dropped off at a private dock outside the city, and out of harms way. I'll be coming around to check your tickets."
Alex shook himself out of his trance and stood up to get to his group. He sat in silence next to Kathy and Darwin, and prepared the tickets for the captain.
"OY!" Alex heard the captain shout from behind. "Do you think that this rubbish could pass as a ticket?" The captain grabbed a man's fake ticket and threw it off the boat. "We're dropping you off at the dock." The man began to plead, but the captain didn't listen.
Alex pulled the tickets out, and made sure that there were eight; one for each of them. He passed them around to the people as the captain prepared to question them.
"You laddies got yur..." He began.
Alex held up his ticket, and the rest of the group followed. "Yes. We brought our tickets, we wouldn't try to hitch a ride."
The captain went around collecting tickets from the members of the group, and Alex looked around at those who had survived.
Himself, Kathy, Darwin, Chad, George, Angela, Brittany, and Samantha. They had made it, and he began to realize all that had happened to them.
As the boat approached the dock on the shore of Oakland, Alex sat there, and he felt a tear begin to form in his eye. He looked around the group to see that people were starting to crack smiles.
"Alex." Kathy started. "We made it." She smiled with tears beginning to flow from her eyes.
She spread her arms, and Alex did the same. While holding onto each other, they began to let their tears escape. All the pain and death had allowed them to finally find their sanctuary. They sat in silence in each other arms, and let their minds go blank. There was no more need for planning, and no more fearing the undead. They were survivors, and they had succeeded.
The boat began to slow, as time began to fly by. The boat changed direction, and the back of the boat faced the empty dock. The fog of the San Francisco Bay began to roll in, so the captain quickly made his way to the back of the boat, grabbing the two tresspassers by the collars of their shirts and dragging them to the back with them pleading. Alex looked up, and took his attention from Kathy.
The captain took them to the back of the boat, and readied his arm to throw them off the boat. But a click in the distance, caused him to stop in his tracks.
Alex's ears perked up, and his hand went immediatly to his back, where his gun lay.
The two men who had forged their tickets stayed perfectly still, while the captain slowly moved them froward, and off the boat. He tried to lower them down, but he couldn't hold their weight while leaning forward. He slammed onto the dock, cursed loudly, and looked up into the mist.
Alex quickly grabbed his gun and poised it towards the mist. The captain's curse echoed across the small portion of the bay, and distant screams began to echo in unison. The rushing bodies of zombies ran forward from the mist, and the captain struggled to get himself up.
Alex ran to the back of the boat and started firing at the zombies that were approaching the dock. He assisted the captain into getting off the floor. "GET US OFF THE DOCK!!"
The captain ran off, leaving Alex by himself fending off the zombie horde. The two men that had been thrown off the boat had already been bitten, but they were surrounded by other zombies, so he had to take them out first. Kathy stood up and grabbed her own weapon from the floor, and assisted Alex in fighting them off. The engine started to kick in, and Alex began to see that the horde was much smaller than expected. He instructed Kathy to go back, as he had control over the oncoming zombies.
He turned back to tell Kathy to take his weapon from him, when he heard a screech from behind. He looked back quickly and saw that one of the men who had been thrown off the boat had jumped off the dock, and had dark red colored eyes. Alex was too slow to react, and the zombie clung onto his arm. It sank it's teeth into him, causing him to scream violently. He grabbed onto the zombie that had loosened it's grip, and flung it back into the water.
"ALEX!!" Kathy screamed. She rushed over to him, and reached towards him.
"No!" He yelled back. "Don't come near me, I might try to kill you." A tear emerged from his eye. He looked down at his arms, and began to see skin begin to fall off. He slumped down to the floor. "When I go crazy, don't be afraid to shoot me. I'm so sorry."
Darwin ran back with Kathy, and Chad soon followed. Chad cocked his shotgun, but Kathy smacked it out of his hands. "DON'T KILL HIM UNTIL HE GOES CRAZY!!" She screamed.
Alex's vision began to become red around the corners, and the skin on his face began to deteriorate. He slumped his head down, and closed his eyes as his mind went blank.
