LEE SUNMI

i should have pushed him off, but i didn't. in fact, i found myself deepening the kiss, accepting him. as his warm lips pressed against my chilled ones, a migraine worked its way slowly into my head. thousands of needles stabbed and something felt different.

snippets of memories came back.

"mum, can i have some money?"

yeonhee kept her gaze trained on the floor while she bit her lower lip nervously. she would've sneaked out to play with her friends by now had she not forgotten that she ran out of pocket money. thus, all she could do was to pray that her mum doesn't get suspicious.

"don't even think about sneaking out." her mum mumbled, her face obscured by the newspaper that she was reading. damn, plan failed.

pouting, yeonhee plopped down on the sofa next to her mum and linked arms with her before clinging on to her like a koala bear. "it's just for a night," she said while raising her index finger for emphasis. "what can happen in one night, right? moreover, i'm already 19. i can take care of myself!"

her mum let out a resigned sigh as she folded the newspaper neatly. "you are well aware of the war that's going on outside right now. you wanna get kidnapped by a demon that badly, huh?"

yeonhee didn't know much about the so-called war. she only knew her dad, the king of the angels, had ordered the city to be in lockdown ever since he caught a demon spy in the city. it was no doubt that the angels and demons hated each other ; they practiced and believed in totally opposite forms powers after all.

as she glanced at the window, yeonhee noticed the addition of a few guards patrolling outside. curious, she turned to her mother. "why is the security so tight tonight?"

her mother followed her gaze. "because the byun family was reported to have been seen in the city. to be more exact, byun baekhyun."

"wait, the demon prince?" yeonhee's eyes widened. "what's he doing here?! does he not know how much danger he's facing by coming to a city that's governed by the angel king himself?

"woah woah woah." yeonhee's mother crossed her arms. "are you actually worried about his safety right now?"

yeonhee rubbed the nape of her neck as she pretended to look at anywhere except her mother. "well, he is handsome..." she said as a matter-of-fact.

in return, she got a hard push from her mother. as she toppled sideways on the couch, her mother stood and gave her a glare. "no pocket money for a month."

flustered, yeonhee got up from the couch immediately and raised her arms to form a heart symbol. "i love you, mum. you know that, right?"

as her mother raised her eyebrows, yeonhee continued, "you're the best mum in this whole wide world. without you, there would be no me. without me, there would be no..." she trailed off as she struggled to think of ways to pacify her mother.
