1860, Hokkaido
December 1:34am
the loud crackling of thunder caused her to wake up with a jolt. pit-pats were heard as raindrops pelted against the roof of the ryokan (a traditional japanese inn). knowing that she would not go back to sleep so easily, yeonhee kept her eyes open and let her thoughts wander aimlessly. she stared at the wall in front of her, where small sections were briefly lighted up by the flashes of lightning.
soon after, the drizzle became a steady downpour. yeonhee flipped over to her side and stretched her arm towards the direction of where she assumed baekhyun was sleeping.
her hands groped at the air.
frowning, yeonhee squinted in the darkness. after confirming that she really was alone in the room, she got up and headed towards the fusuma (sliding doors) , her eyes already adjusted to the darkness.
yeonhee's feet padded on the floor as she made her way towards the only source of sound coming from one of the guests room. it sounded like 2 people were talking, but she was sure baekhyun had not told her anything about someone visiting them.
a hand snaked around her waist and she opened her mouth to gasp but another hand was clamped over her mouth. her struggles proved to be futile against her strong assailant as she was literally dragged out of the house and into the pouring rain.
she focused on directing magic into her fingertips which were only starting to emit a tiny glow when her assailant whispered, "i wouldn't do that if i were you."
yeonhee froze at the familiar voice. "kai?"
the strong grip on her was gone and she whipped around to find baekhyun's cousin staring at her, his expression unreadable. yeonhee's clothes were already drenched and she shivered violently.
"what do you want?" she spat, venom lacing her words.
"as expected from the fiesty angel, " kai smirked. "oujo (princess)"
yeonhee glared at him. "why are you even here? the last time i heard, my father imprisoned you."
"guess i got out." kai shrugged. yeonhee's eyes darted back and forth between him and the door. she was strong, but she knew she wouldn't be able to defeat kai. he was, after all, one of the strongest demons alive.
also, she had to admit that she always had had a soft spot for him. something in his eyes told her that his actions were as a result of the temptation to gain the demon king's appraisal.
"once again, i wouldn't do that if i were you." kai said, following her gaze. "you wouldn't want to go back in there. in fact, i'm helping you."
"by dragging me out?" yeonhee scoffed, blinking rapidly to get rid of the raindrops that landed on her eyelashes. the howling wind threatened to carry their voices away.
kai raised his voice as a result. "i'm serious. do you-" he clenched his fists and anger flashed in his eyes. "do you even know what your fiancee is doing right now?"
"what are you talking about?"
without answering, kai grabbed her arm and pulled her back into the house. they left visible footprints behind them and as they stood in front of the guest room once again, kai opened the door slightly.
two dark figures were seen huddling on the floor. a guy hugging a woman that was clad in revealing clothes. yeonhee barely made out the murmurs.
"i'm afraid you can't stay here for too long, love. you arrived out of nowhere." a deep voice resounded.
