"Morgan, this actually really fucking hurts." Owen grimaced.
"Stop being such a whiner. Didn't you want to get lyrics tattooed on your arm?"
"I was sixteen and My Chemical Romance hadn't broken up yet."
"And this is just slightly more painful. Than the tattoo, not the break up. The break up hurt me a whole lot more."
Morgan was using a crystal pen to draw the sigil on Owen's hand, and the streak of the mineral induced an uncomfortable burning sensation. Morgan finished up, and Owen stared at his hand. It looked a little like a white ink tattoo, but was even less visible, it was the kind of mark that would go unnoticed unless you knew exactly what you were looking for.
"So what now?" Morgan asked.
"I have no idea. You don't suppose Drake would be nice enough to show up at your doorstep so I can tag him?" Owen sighed.
"Doubt it." Morgan affirmed.
"I guess there really isn't much we can do right now."
"Go home. Go get some rest. We'll come up with something, okay?"
"I think I might just do that."
Morgan walked Owen downstairs, and they said their goodbyes. Morgan looked at Owen a little concerned as he watched him walk off, but decided not to press the matter. Walking back upstairs, Morgan noticed his arm feeling strange, but it was more an inconvenient tingle than anything else. He put the thought out of mind, and got to his room, closing the door behind him.
"Hello, Morgan Siegfried." A voice said.
Morgan turned with his hands already on the runes drawn into his arms, but then Drake was so close that Morgan could hear him breathe. Morgan tried shoving, but Drake caught it, and drove a fist into Morgan's elbow, caving the joint in backwards and breaking his arm, but the force of it was so strong that bone pierced the skin. Morgan screamed in agony as the searing hot pain overwhelmed him. Drake punched him square in the nose, and Morgan fell to the floor, barely holding onto consciousness, losing blood fast.
"You're going to have to excuse my manners, but you see... I'm going to need you out of the way for the next hour or so. I'm sure someone will find you and get you the medical attention you need by then. Nothing personal... Well, actually, it's entirely personal, but I have no personal vendetta against you."
Drake picked Morgan up by his hair, and smashed his forehead into the floor. Morgan went limp, and Drake released him.
"So, you just sit tight and I'm sure there'll be a medic on the scene shortly." He laughed.
A bit of a way down the road, Owen decided to take a detour before going home, and walked to the cemetery. He trotted along the all too familiar path towards Lisa's grave, and stared at it. It felt different this time. He felt like he was better.
"Hey." Owen greeted the familiarly silent grave. "So, I'm back."
He smiled, and it felt odd doing so.
"This time, funny enough, things are better. I met someone. A girl. She's beautiful, I mean, really, she's stunning. She's funny, and smart, and ever since I met her, things have been... Different. Just a few weeks ago, I was drowning under the weight of the world and my own sadness. But because I met her, the world is bigger and weirder and even though everything is crazy and messed up, I'm better. So I need to find her. I need to save her, because she kinda saved me. Also, I got stabbed for the first time. Thought you'd find that one funny. And sorry to disappoint, but it wasn't because I said something sarcastic. I never thanked you for keeping me together when my dad died, and I never got to thank Eva for trying to keep me together when you died. But I don't want people to keep me together anymore. And I guess for once, I want to keep someone else together, I want to save someone else from the demons chasing them. I don't know when I'm going to be back. So don't wait for me, okay? It probably bores you to tears, but thanks for listening. I'm gonna make you proud of me. You and my dad are going to look down and smile, okay? I'm gonna do better. It might mean that I won't come visit as often, but maybe it's time I start living my life. I've spent too long trying to reconcile myself with death."
The clouds above him had gathered, and thunder grumbled in the distance. He stood in silence with her grave for a little while longer, and really took the moment in. It might have seemed insignificant to anyone watching, but it was important. Because his life had stood still for so long, and it was finally moving forward, finally going somewhere. And in that moment, when as the thunderclouds gathered and the drizzle slowly climbed its way across the town towards him, as the man with the remote to the universe pressed play, Owen knew that today was the first day of the rest of his life.
And as he had that thought, Owen felt his phone vibrate.
"Eva? Eva, listen, don't hang up." He said, frantically, a part of him expecting good news.
"Sorry kiddo. It's just me." Said the voice on the other side, clearly not Evangeline's.
"Alyssa?" He said a surprised.
"Don't sound so let down. Hey. Owen? I just want you to know... It's nice to hear your voice." She spoke softly. He heard a small sigh of relief.
"Please tell me you're okay."
"Owen, thank you so much. For everything. For picking up."
"You are not going to do this to me. I am not going to lose you too. I'll come find you, just keep talking, we can figure this out."
"If we met under different circumstances, I think I'd have fallen in love with you. What am I saying, I think I already have. I say goodbye to people so often that you'd think I'd be better at it."
"Alyssa, please."
"Imagine we got married. Alyssa Cavalier. It sounds so stupid. You should take my last name." He could hear her start to cry.
"Just tell me where you are. I can save you. Just please, please just don't hang up. I made you a promise."
"And that was sweet, but I officially release you from your promise. And don't make any more promises you can't keep, or I'll haunt you after I'm dead."
"No one is dying. You either tell me where you are Alyssa or when I finally get to you I am going to, I am going to... I don't even know. Please, just please, tell me something, anything, landmarks, the time of day, the temperature, because I am going to find you, Alyssa St. Claire."
"I think I'm a little bit in love with you."
"You can say that to my face."
"I don't even know how much time I have. I'll probably be dead within the next few minutes."
"I'll die before I let that happen."
"Everything is kind of blurry. Don't come looking for me. He'll use you to hurt me. Please, just let me go." Alyssa said. Owen gritted his teeth. His blood was boiling.
"Listen to me. I am going to save you. Don't give up. I swear I won't ever give up on you. Wait for me, okay? I'll find you." Owen said.
"You can't save me, you never will. I'm not her, I'm not Lisa and I'm not worth dying for so Owen, please... Don't try to save me. Just be happy, okay? I'm so glad I met you." Alyssa said.
"I am going to kill him."
"Owen, listen, please-..."
The line went dead.
Suddenly, he felt like he needed to do something.
