5.20.16 - Last day of classes
"So close," I think to myself, "Just one more minute."
The bell rings, its sound bouncing across the hallways like deez nuts.
The classroom erupts in excitement; summer had finally arrived. Students rush to stuff their stuff in their backpacks, which are used to hold stuff.
Caught up in the excitement, I race to the doors of the school, desperate to be free from the shackles of teachers and homework. Ten feet away from the door, I run face first into one of my best friends, Maia Carmichael. She lets out a shriek of alarm, and almost faceplants, but I pull her into a hug, catching her.
"Crap, I am so sorry," I apologize, "I should've seen you."
"Haha, that's totally ok," she replies jokingly, "Besides, I got a hug from the great Ezra Fitz."
Maia and I have known each other since I was in kindergarten, but we only became close friends this past year. I've had a huge crush on her since then, but I could never bring myself to tell her.
"Wait, this is your last day here, right?" I ask her.
Oh, and she's two years older than me.
"Oh my god, yes I almost forgot," she replies, "I'm gonna miss you."
In our school, if you have enough credits by your junior year, you can graduate that year, and that's exactly what Maia's doing.
"This is, like, the last time I'll ever see you then," I say sadly.
"Aw come on, don't be like that, I'll try to visit as much as I can," she assures me with a coy smile, "Besides, Melinda's still here."
Melinda's her sister, who I've known for as long as I can remember. Maia's always trying to get use together, completely oblivious that I like her and not Melinda. I mean, she's great and all, and I really like her, but she doesn't exactly melt my heart like Maia does. Oh my...
"Yea, I guess so, but I'm still really gonna miss you," I reply.
"Wow, you're really bummed out, is something wrong?" she inquires.
"Umm..."
"No really, what's up?"
"Well, we've known each other for a long time, and we're really great friends, but..."
Maia looks at me with a puzzled expression, "But, what..?"
"I like you Maia, I really do," I finally say, "I was so happy when we got close this year, and I was hoping we could have been more."
She stares at me with her beautiful emerald green eyes for what seems like an eternity. Then she slaps me, knocking my glasses to the floor.
"Ezra Fitz, you idiot, why didn't you tell me earlier?" She wraps her arms around my neck and pulls me into a kiss. And I nearly pass out. My insides feel like they're being blended and then melted in an oven. I feel my heart pound so strongly that the whole school could probably hear it.
After we finally pull away, gasping for air, someone shouts from across the hallway, "WHAT THE HELL?!"
We both glance at the direction of the noise, and what I see almost makes me crap my pants. It's Melinda.
