Riley yawned, stretching her arms high into the air. It was the first day of high school at San Francisco High School. Riley was totally prepared. Her outfit was planned out, she had a new backpack that looked like leather, and she was going to wear the cutest little black baseball cap her cousin gave her over the summer.
"Up and at'em!" Joy cheered. She rushed towards the screen, where Riley was shown picking up her outfit.
"Ew, not that jacket!" Disgust came up behind Joy. "We've been wearing that same old thing since fifth grade!"
"Oh, c'mon, Disgust," Joy rolled her eyes. "It's, like, our trademark!"
Riley put her yellow knit jacket over her baby blue tee shirt and looked in the mirror. She looked so mature, except maybe the jacket, but that was ok.
"Oh, we have school," Sadness sighed.
"What?! School?" Fear cried. "I haven't finished my list of possible bad things that will happen in HIGH SCHOOL!" He rushed into another room.
"But Moooom!" Riley begged at the breakfast table. "Why can't I bike to school?"
"The high school is too far." Her mother replied, flipping a pancake.
"But you let me walk to elementary and middle school!"
"They're only a block away. Your new school is, like, a mile,"
"Mooooom!"
"No."
Riley sighed and slumped down in her chair as her mom placed two pancakes on her plate.

The school bus was five minutes late. Riley wouldn't have time to check in with Mia. Mia became Riley's good friend last year, in eighth grade. She was pretty tomboyish, too, and she joined Riley's hockey team.
"Late!" Fear said. "We won't be able to compare outfits, or something!"
"Relax, Fear," Joy smiled. "Riley and Mia can talk at lunch."
Riley took an empty seat near the back of the bus. No one sat beside her. Everyone was in their own cliques, chatting and taking selfies. Riley didn't really have a clique. She only had Mia. Most of her other friends from both middle school and her hockey team would be going to another high school across town.
"We need to make more friends this year," Joy proclaimed.
"But no one will like us," Sadness said quietly.
"Sadness, cheer up! People will like us! I mean, we're freaking RILEY ANDERSON!"
"I guess so..."
The bus jerked to a halt, making Riley lunge forward. As she made her way to the exit, she heard a group of girls whisper a couple of lines.
"Her hat is so ugly!"
"She's been wearing that jacket since fifth grade!"
Riley recognized that last voice. It was Amy, a.k.a Cool Girl. She had colourful streaks in her hair, and wore lots of eye makeup. She and Riley were never friends, but they got along ok. Why was she being so mean with these other girls? Maybe it's because her other friends were at the other high school.
A new memory was created. It was blue. Sadness rubbed it gently.
"Sadness!" Joy shouted.
"Sorry. But it's my own memory!"
Joy sighed. "Amy was pretty rude. But maybe she'll be nicer later...?"
