The black lake wasn't originally called that. Sirius claimed the lake was his in 3rd year and forbade anyone to go near it. He even tried evicting the giant squid! His reign of terror lasted 5 weeks until Dumbledore and the other marauders made him see sense. However, the name Black lake was the compromise that had to be made.
