The marauders were absolute worst at lying and making stuff. They panicked under pressure and would was stupid but surprisingly people believed these things.
For Example-
"Mr. Black, why are you late?"
"Um... My brother's friend's sister's uncle's pet rock died, and the funeral went a little long"
"What you seen Remus? He's been gone all day."
"Yeah, um, he caught a bout or dragon pox, very awful luck. He should be back soon though."
