Elise felt Enjolras' hand become soft and solidify in hers. A brilliant, warm, white light enveloped them. Francis was now holding her other hand and smiling up to her. As her surroundings materialized, Elise gasped. Around her were all her friends and loved ones. Meg was healthy and beautiful and enveloped her in a hug.
"I missed you, Lizzie," she beamed.
Gavroche ran up to her. "Hiya!"
Behind him was Éponine, smiling at her. "Missed me?"
Courfeyrac grinned. "Hey, Elise! Long time no see!"
Jehan smiled sweetly. "Elise, we've been waiting for you!"
Combeferre, Lesgle, Bahorel, and Feuilly all smiled and welcomed her back.
Grantaire, at the back of the group, smiled silently at her.
It was then that she realized where they were. Everyone was indeed holding a flag.
They were on the barricade.
Do you hear the people sing?
Lost in the valley of the night
It is the music of a people who are climbing to the light
For the wretched of the Earth
There is a flame that never dies
Even the darkest night will end
And the sun will rise!
It was as if the revolutionaries were finally experiencing victory on the barricade. Elise finally felt young and happy again alongside Enjolras and Francis.
We will live again in freedom
In the garden of The Lord
We will walk behind the plough-share
We will put away the sword
The chain will be broken and all men will have their reward!
Enjolras waved his large red flag as Elise waved a French one. The moment was so spectacular and grand, she forgot all of the pain of the last eight years.
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you want to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that we bring
When tomorrow comes!
Finally they would all see peace.
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you want to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that we bring
When tomorrow comes!
Elise picked up Francis and turned, giving Enjolras a kiss.
"I love you, Enjolras."
"I love you too, Elise."
They were going to be together for the rest of eternity.
Tomorrow comes!
