Black Wood's Bride

Country road, so peaceful and quiet,

Nighttime reveals monsters and riot.

Feel the gentle, southern, breeze,

And smile at the laughing sun,

But darkness brings joy to no one.

The sun has sunk into the sea,

But there are still places to go and people to see.

Drive along now, little fly,

While the spider cackles softly; willing you to die.

Here she comes, riding on ghostly, eerie, mist,

In the form of a maiden you wouldn't kiss.

Woman in white, stands proudly a corpse,

Her skin, like sandpaper, is rough and course.

Hair matted, stuck in clumps,

Gnarled hands like a tree's trunk.

White dress is pitiful, stained with grime,

Eyes dark with the secret of crime.

Chapped lips part to reveal a crooked smile,

And you feel your throat constrict with bile.

Soft, malicious, seductive words,

Flow from her mouth, but are barely heard.

Out of curiosity you lean in to hear,

"Kindest Sir, with your assistance,

Could I get a ride to the town of Condistance?"

In confusion, you pull back,

Then the meaning of her words sting like a slap.

She asks to travel to a town long forgotten,

It's buildings and homes now ruined and rotten.

Horror fills you, so you simply stare,

Willing your lungs to take in air.

Dimly, you nod, mind reeling,

And she grins, smiling without feeling.

"You have passed your test, mortal dear,"

I shall let you live for another year."

The ghostly bride, as swift as before,

Vanishes into mist, and your engines roars.

You tear down the road, driven by fear,

Vowing to never, never again, travel here.
