it is 2 o'clock in the morning,
(the witching hour)
and i have abandoned my blankets for fireflies.
crept to the edge of my dewy lawn,
peered around the bushes in the back,
and stared, open-mouthed,
wondering how the moon can look
like a sticker
i could peel from the starry sky.
even here,
i see his smile in constellations.
imagine lace dresses and tap-dance feet
a red satin cape and chocolate coin eyes,
i imagine us ballroom dancing
like a pair of fools in a Disney script.
so i dream up a prince.
my lover is tall
and charming,
with marble hands;
has royal manners-
presses pretty pink lips to my peasant palms.
and i know the way
briar rose
and snow white
and rapunzel
and cinderella
and ariel and jasmine and belle all knew
how very much in love we are
and oh,
what we could be,
if fairy tales came true.
