Demi laid in bed thinking about her day. The day had gone well for her, she made a new friend and felt happier. She'd normally sneak down to the basement for a drink before she went to bed but today she didn't feel a need too.It was a weird sensation she felt not washing her feelings down with a drink. Tonight what she felt was bearable. She didn't feel sad, lonely and overwhelmed. Demi felt relieved in a way, relieved that she didn't feel like she did on most nights. She couldn't stop thinking about how well her day actually went.
Her mind kept racing until it hit a bump. Would she always feel this happy? Was this a one time thing? Would getting her hopes up only lead to disappointment?
Her happy thoughts turned to destructive thoughts in an instant. She had no idea why Haley was suddenly friends with her. They both knew each other for years yet they'd only just begun talking that day.
What if Haley only became friends with her for her own benefit? But what would that benefit be? Or maybe Haley was always just to shy to talk to Demi and Ms. Clark just happened to give her an extra push that day.
Demi knew Haley could probably make friends easily, she was nice and also skinny. Demi on the other hand thought she was heavier than the other girls. Kids can be brutal and cruel.
It didn't help that Demi was always insecure with her body but that her classmates had to add on to it. Her thoughts wouldn't stop, her brain was whirling and there was nothing safe that could stop it.
She wanted to drink, it was her way out. As if she were being controlled, she sat up straight on her bed, stood up, walked into her closet, opened up a shoe box and pulled out a can of beer. She could store up to three 6-packs but right now her stash was running low. She knew there was more in the basement so there was no reason to start freaking out.
She only had four cans left, and that would only last her a week if she were lucky. Demi grabbed her black, tin water bottle and poured the alcoholic drink into it. She couldn't risk getting caught , so she was the one to always take the garbage out.
Demi grabbed the bottle and started drinking. She thought about all the nights she stayed up dreading school the next day. She then thought about her estranged father but quickly changed her train of thought since she was getting too emotional. Demi took another gulp and laid her head back down on her pillow.
She felt dizzy and her ears rang. She felt her bed tilt as she relaxed into her spinning world. Her eyes slowly shut as she fell asleep.
