Time went by quickly as the girls discussed their essays. Haley had figured out her three sub points and finished her outline with the help of Demi and of course her English teacher.
Ms. Clark joined in every so often to clear up the ideas the girls were having. She felt so refreshed to see the two kids in front of her so happy. They were laughing and goofing off as the conversation got side tracked. It was almost as if they had been friends forever.
"Girls, lunch period is almost over you have to eat." Ms. Clark interrupted.
"I forgot my lunch today." Haley said.
This happened quite often. Some days she really forgot but often there wasn't enough food at home to bring to school. Ms. Clark had noticed Haley often had no lunch so she would always packed extra food. Demi also noticed that Haley usually had a very small lunch and she always debated sharing but didn't want to butt in on her privacy.
Today was different, Demi didn't want to see Haley hungry and both girls thought they had made a friend. Demi was going to ask if Haley wanted some of her food.
"I'm not very hungry, you can have some food from my lunch." Demi spoke up.
"Oh." Haley looked embarrassed.
"All I really want is my banana so you can have whatever else. If you don't eat it I'm probably going to take it home and throw it away by accident so it's better that someone eats it." Demi said.
Although that wasn't true. Demi's family wasn't as poor as Haley's but they didn't have so much money lying around that she could go around throwing her food away.
"Demi you can't just eat a banana for lunch." Ms. Clark said.
Ms. Clark and Haley both knew Demi didn't like eating. It was like how Haley was having trouble with school, it was never spoken about but Demi knew. Just like Demi not wanting to eat or eating and heading straight for the washroom. No one ever mentioned it but they just knew.
Ms. Clark never called her out on it but she tried her best to make sure she ate something. She would also try to keep a conversation with Demi so she couldn't sneak away to the washroom. It really wasn't her job but Ms. Clark didn't like to see students struggling.
"I'll have a banana and a granola bar." Demi said while Ms. Clark nodded.
That left a juice box, a sandwich and a bag of goldfish for Haley. Demi slid the rest of the food to Haley.
"Thank you." Haley said.
Demi looked nervous to be eating with other people which Haley and Ms. Clark noticed so they both just turned to each other and ate. Demi felt a little more relaxed after they did that.
"Why do you do your homework at school?" Haley asked Demi. She was the kind of person that would bring up random questions at random times.
"Because I take dance after school and I like having free time to play guitar and stuff." Demi answered.
"You play the guitar?" Haley asked.
"Yeah. Do you?" Demi asked.
"Well a little bit, my dad left it. I never took lessons but I like the sound it makes." Haley said.
Demi wondered what she meant by 'my dad left it'. She was curious but didn't say anything. Demi nodded and kept chewing her food.
"You should come over some time and maybe we can teach each other some stuff." Demi bravely asked.
"Yeah that sounds fun." Haley answered.
She really wanted to hang out with Demi but she always had to look after her baby sister, Maelynne.
Ms. Clark had made her way back over to her desk while the two girls were talking. She was smiling at their engagement.
"I'm actually free tonight." Demi said.
Demi normally would have dance but the senior team was in a different state for a competition so they had to cancel class for the night.
"I have to babysit my little sister." Haley answered sadly.
"Bring her my mom won't mind. I have a little sister too." Demi said.
Haley didn't realize Demi had a younger sister. She knew Demi had an older sister that went to the adjacent high school. In all honesty Demi's mom wouldn't mind Haley's younger sister. Demi hadn't had a friend over in a while and her mom was thinking she was getting a little lonely.
"Really? Are you sure?" Haley asked.
"Well if your mom is okay with it." Demi said.
Haley technically wasn't babysitting because her mom was at home but her mom was so depressed that it was almost as if Haley was living on her own. The money they had was from the government and the house they were currently living in was also owned by the government.
"Probably." Haley said.
The lunch bell rang and the girls got ready to head to their next class, science. Demi never did eat that granola bar. Haley and Ms. Clark noticed but didn't say anything.
Haley knew Demi tried to sneak off to purge in the bathroom so she was going to try her best to keep her new friend by her side.
The girls both thanked Ms. Clark for letting them stay behind after class because she didn't have to let them stay.
"Always girls. I'll see you tomorrow." Ms. Clark said happily.
They both headed out the door.
"I'm just going to the washroom. I'll meet you in science." Demi said.
"Actually I have to go too." Haley said.
Demi knew what Haley was doing. She wasn't very subtle and even though Demi appreciated it, she couldn't just not purge.
"Haley please." Demi sounded desperate. She knew Haley knew. She knew Ms. Clark was curious. It was almost like how Demi knew even deeper about Haley's struggle with school but never mentioned it. It wasn't fair because Haley was mentioning this.
Then Demi's brain clicked, she helped Haley earlier and maybe she was just trying to help now. Atleast thats what Demi thought even though Haley's intention wasn't to get even but to help Demi out. Haley knew she had to let Demi go on her own even if she had stopped Demi right now she would have gone later.
"I'll see you in class Demi." Haley smiled and with that Demi went to the washroom.
On her way there she started thinking to herself. What if Haley thought she was crazy? Haley knew she purged. Haley knew that she didn't eat. Demi never wanted her to find out but she was the only one who stayed after lunch hour. Haley happened to use the washroom after lunch too and Haley had heard her but never said anything.
