It was quiet in the car. The kids were waiting for their mom to arrive so they could walk into their house.

Haley's dad had parked in front of the house. There was no sign of anybody inside. Haley had her keys to enter the doors but her dad didn't want to leave the kids alone although they were used to it.

"Haley, I want you to know that I will be asking for primary custody." He said. "I don't want to control you like your mother does. I won't ask for full custody like your mother has and when you want to go see her I won't stop you ever stop you from doing so."

Haley started tearing up. She had memories of her dad being very caring and it felt nice to be with him again.

She wished she had been in close contact with her dad but her mother made it pretty much impossible. She wanted to be more comfortable with her dad and it made her sad that she couldn't be because he was sort of a stranger to her.

After what felt like hours of waiting, the girls mom showed up. Haley and her dad were just telling stories while Mae was listening to them talk when they saw their mother walking down the street.

Haley wasn't sure if she took the bus or if she walked because she didn't know how much time had gone by.

As she saw her mom walk closer to the car she tensed up. She had not felt this care free in a while and now she had to go home. Her mother would probably be angry with her and MaeLynne. It was unfair for two children to go through.

Haley was having a hard time leaving but she knew she had to put on a brave face.

"Bye dad." She whispered so tears would catch her words.

"Come here darling." Said her dad.

Haley leaned up to the drivers seat and he gave her a gentle kiss on the cheek.

"Mae you too."

Haley felt her heart restore as he softly kissed Mae on the cheek. She realized that he really cared for them. It made her feel comfortable knowing that she had a parent that genuinely just wanted the best for not only her but her baby sister as well.

Haley carried her baby sister out of the car and her father sighed.

He didn't understand how a kid could have been through so much. It was unfair that Haley had taken the role of MaeLynne's mother.

He understood how important her baby sister was to her. He couldn't see how the women he married years ago could change and become the person she is today.

He felt nervous letting the girls go to their mom's house but he also knew that Haley was a very smart young girl.

The kid's mom built speed in her steps as she saw her kids get out of her ex husband's car.

Haley tensed as she saw her mom but nevertheless she walked towards the house with her sister on her hip.

She unlocked the door with her key but didn't walk in. She stood waiting for her mom.

She grabbed the mail that was sitting in the mailbox attached to the house and saw that there were some coupons to MacDonald's.

She didn't really like eating fast food and she knew it wasn't good for her or Mae but when her mother wouldn't go grocery shopping she realized it was better than nothing.

They all made there way inside. No one said a word. Mae-Lynne had become excellent at picking up cues at such a young age.

Haley was scared to do anything so she waited for her mom to say something.

"Are you just going to stand there and look useless?" She asked.

Haley shook her head.

"Good." She spat.

Although Haley was used to her mom not being in a great mood she rarely was spiteful towards her.

"I raised you and that kid. I can't believe you would listen to that man and not me. I don't want to see either of you for the rest of the day." She whispered the last sentence and walked into her room.

Haley let out a breath she didn't even know she was holding.

Mae looked scared but still stayed quiet.

Haley slowly and quietly walked into her room still carrying Mae on her hip.

When they reached their room Haley let Mae down on her bed. Mae had tears forming in her eyes.

It broke Haley's heart to see that her baby sister was trying to hide her emotions.

This didn't feel right to her. It wasn't fair. As she let out a frustrated scream into her pillow Mae tapped at her leg.

Haley looked down to Mae to see what she wanted.

"No cry Aye-Lee"

Haley managed to stop her tears and sunk down onto the floor to Mae-Lynne's level.

"I love you so much."

Haley knew this wasn't the way life was supposed to be. She was tired of walking on eggshells around her mother. Although she loved MaeLynne with all her heart and more, Haley knew that her job wasn't to be her primary caregiver. After spending time with her father, things felt different. She felt a change coming.
