"CUT!" A voice yelled from behind a tree. I sat up and wiped the tears from my eyes as I reached down to help Kyoni up.
"Thanks, Mara." He smiled as he ran his hand over his messy face, wiping away the red goo that was made to look like blood. I nodded my head with a smile and silently turned to face the 'demons' who were taking their masks off, laughing, and high fiving eachother triumphantly.
"Ooo! We got you guys good!" Hunter yelled excitedly as a shorter girl named Issi peaked out from behind him and shared in the glory. Issi and Hunter were cousins, though people often mistook them for twins. Issi had a nicely shaped face, round, but more of a heart shape if anything. She had large hazel eyes with lips that curved perfectly, accented in some ever changing shade of lip gloss, and her eyes were always lined with makeup. I had never seen her without the makeup but I could tell she was just as beautiful either way. Many people thought of her as the varsity cheerleader type, but in reality she was into wrestling and kick boxing.
Hunter on the other hand was not as imoressive. He was a classic jock stereotype, the kind of guy who thought he was better than a lot of people only because he was the quarterback at our high school. He was born with blond hair, but the color he wore recently was a brownish red color, and short cut.
"Of course you guys did, it's in the script." Kyoni rolled his eyes at Hunters comment. I turned my eyes back to Kyoni and blushed slightly as he simultaneously glanced towards me. Kyoni was my best friend, and my secret crush. He had blue hair that invaded his face, styled to look like the 'classic' emo cut, but personally I thought he looked more like a samurai character. He often wore green contacts - his reason being that he thought it would make him look cooler, which it did, but his natural eyes were a dazzling bright blue, a blue that brought back memories of the ocean embedded into my mind, the ocean I was born from. I blinked a few times as I realized Kyoni was snapping his fingers in front of my face and I pushed his hand away playfully.
"What are you thinking about?" He asked, staring down at me. I pursed my lips together and shook my head.
"Why do you want to know?" I asked in response. He raised an eyebrow and I already knew exactly what he was thinking.
"As if you don't already know the answer."
"You space out a lot. It worries me, sometimes, if you must know." He replied instead. I nodded my head with a small smirk playing on my lips. Yes, that was an acceptable answer. He laughed a bit as he rolled his eyes again before turning his attention to Blake, the director of our movie, as the tall, dark man proceeded towards the four of us.
"Great job guys, I can tell this movie is going to be really good." He said happily, his eyes mostly hovering on me as he spoke. I smiled and nodded politely at him, waiting until Blake glanced away to take a small step behind my blue haired guardian. Kyoni turned his head and gave me his classic is-everything-okay look, but I shook my head to let him know it was nothing to worry about. The truth of the matter was that Blake gave off the strangest, most unsettling vibe. Everytime I was near him I felt like danger couldnt be too far away, I wasn't fond of the feeling, but it kept me on my toes. Blake looked down at his watch and tapped it a few times as if checking to see that it still worked.
"Oh, is that the right time?" He asked as he looked back up and showed us his watch. It was 6:38PM. My head snapped up towards the sky and I quickly realized that even though the sky was still very bright and blue, the sun was going to disappear soon. I needed to get home.
"So can we go home now? I still have homework to do." Hunter said. I scoffed, knowing he probably just paid some random nerd to do it for him. He wasn't the type to put effort into anything other than sports. Blake nodded his head and we walked over to the curtains they had set up so we could change back into our normal clothes. I walked into one and stared back at myself, it was the same reflection that I had been staring at for centuries. The first thing that always caught my attention were my eyes. When I was younger they were so bright and full of life, constantly changing every different color from yellow to red as I learned to develop my powers and strengthened them, but as time went on they slowly grew darker, so dark they almost looked black now.
My eyes fell to my costume and I smiled a bit at the irony of it. In the movie that Blake envisioned my character was a girl named Julineea, who is an alien. She was captured by the demons and held as a prisoner all her life. When she finally escaped she hid on earth and created a new name for herself, Amy Castrov. She met a boy named Ryan who wanted to protect her once he found out who she was but then, naturally, the demons find her and then the climactic battle occurs - followed by a happily ever after, as is custom in most movies. I somewhat enjoyed the fact that this girl I pretended to be was actually very similar to who I really was. I changed quickly as I remembered what time of day it was, grabbed my stuff and sped out of the flimsy, makeshift tent.
"Hey, Mara, wait up!" Kyoni called from somewhere behind me. I shut my eyes tightly and bit my lip as I stopped walking. I turned around to see Kyoni strutting towards me, a determined look set on his face and I sighed quietly to myself. I knew this boy way too well. His facial expressions were easy to read and always gave away his thoughts. Once again, I already knew exactly what he was about to say, though I dreaded the question every night.
"So, I... I was thinking we could do our homework together tonight? I mean... not like I need help but... but you know..." He stammered with a nervous smile on his face. I furrowed my eyebrows together. He didn't really want to study of course, his clear eyes giving away his secret intentions to win my love and affection.
"Oh... well... I already finished my homework, and, as usual, my brother wants me home to do some chores around the house." I lied with an apologetic smile. My heart beat rapidly as his face changed to a look of rejection and I forced myself to bite my tongue. I did want his company, the thoughts of going on a date with him bounced around my brain, but night was a dangerous time for me, I couldnt involve him in my problems. Kyoni sighed and looked around the familiar forest before turning his attention back to me.
"Can I at least walk you home?" He asked. I nodded my head with a brief smile, it was okay to be with him a little longer...
As long as I got home before dark.
