The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, it was the perfect day to just sit out in the sun and take in the rays to better my vitamin D. Unfortunately I made a mistake a few weeks ago that resulted in me playing bodyguard.
See, I'm the kind of person who doesn't do anything. I prefer solitude and silence without the need of movement or any interaction. Basically, helping this particular person, which was completely out of character for me, caused me to do more in a few hours than I've done in five years. If you haven't guessed by now, I'm just horribly lazy.
I stared at him as he sat beside me in the courtyard. I'd already found my place and was laying comfortably when he came trotting over and just sat there. "Hey, um, whats up?"
He glanced over at me as he ate white rice from his bento. "I'm eating lunch. Do you always sleep here?"
I nodded. "Yeah. It's quiet and hardly anyone comes here"
"Oh. Why not go to the roof? It's quiet there too"
I closed my eyes. "That's for the main characters"
He frowned. "What?"
"The main characters. You know?"
"No. What are you talking about?"
I sat up. "Look, the roof is where all the main characters in manga hang out. I'm not the main character of anything and the courtyard is better. But anyway, what are you doing here?"
"I told you. It's quiet. And your here"
"Ah" I sat up and looked at his bento. "You get harassed by the guys a lot, don't you?"
"And you're really lazy, aren't you?"
I nodded. "Yeah. I'm lazy. But if you want to just be my friend instead of following me around like your stalking me"
"I'm not stalking you"
"I know your not. What your trying to do is be around me so those guys don't target you. Why don't you just stand up for yourself"
He looked down at his bento. "I'm smaller than them. And I do fight them I just keep losing. I practice fighting all the time and train to get really strong but it just doesn't work. How are you so strong? You don't do anything!"
"True, I am lazy. But I'm also not small and I'm just naturally strong. You, on the other hand, are small and you look like a girl" I admitted.
He put his head down and I almost felt bad for saying that. But I mean, it's the truth. "I hate looking like a girl"
I sighed and stood up, brushing the dirt off my uniform. "Well then change your appearance. If you don't want to look like a girl then don't look like a girl. If you want to get stronger than get stronger. There's no reason you need to hide behind me"
I was beginning to walk away when he reached out and grabbed my coat. "Wait. How?"
"I don't know. Gain confidence, don't put up with people's shit. Dont get so scared of things so easily"
"Easy for you to say. People are scared of you and they won't target you"
I sighed. "Fine" I turned to him. "What do you want me to do about it?"
"I... Don't know" he looked down at his meal and sulked. "I just hate how all of them look at me like I'm a piece of meat!" I flinched as his personality changed from a sweet to suddenly rotten. "I'd kick their asses if I could! They're so disgusting and then they push me down! I'm a guy for crying out loud" he jumped up, clenching his fists tightly together.
"Hey, calm down before people hear you" I held my hand out, but he pushed away from me and started screaming into the sun. "Yasuma"
He wasn't listening. He just continued screaming his feelings into the sky, vocalizing his anger. I'm pretty sure it was about ten minutes until he finally sighed and calmed down. "Are you done?" I asked, kneeling down where he was panting in exhausted anger.
He seethed and stared at me. "I'm sick if them. This all boys school just sucks!"
"You know, if you applied your anger to beating the crap out of the guys that keep attacking you, you'd probably be able to defend yourself"
Yasuma didn't move. "Your probably right. It still doesn't help. They're just animals"
I groaned. "Then start dating someone so they'll see that your taken. That way they'll leave you alone and even if they don't your boyfriend will beat the crap out if them"
"What if I'm not gay?" He asked dully.
I shrugged, rubbing the back of my head. "Then get a friend or someone to pretend to date you. All you need is to intidate the guys attacking you. Anyone should do, right?"
He thought a good long while, then lifted his head to stare at me with his mouth wide open. "You!"
"W-what?"
He jumped in front of me with a mild smile. "You! I don't have any friends and your the one who suggested it"
"You don't have friends?"
He grabbed onto my arm. "With you around none of those idiots will think twice about pushing me down!"
All I could do was stare at him in pure disillusion. I understood that I said it, it my my suggestion, but why must I take responsibility for this? Because just like that, I went from my quiet subdued life to this. Acting as if I'm some kind of bodyguard. Honestly, so much work.
/A Few Hours Later/
"This is boring" Yasuma complained.
I sighed and turned to him. "You know, you don't have to be here if you're bored. It's not like you'll build a reputation sitting in my room"
"Yeah, but, if we're going to pretend to date we should get to know each other"
"I guess" I rested on my bed, closing my eyes. "But I don't do much. There's nothing fun to do. You might as well go home"
He groaned. "Come on! Let's do something!" I jolted as he jumped into of me. "You'll have fun, I promise"
"I won't have fun. I don't like doing anything" With a final sigh he fell on the bed next to me. He smelled nice, like strawberry's and grapes. "Smells nice"
"What?"
I shook my head. "Nothing. It's fine" as I closed my eyes again I remembered the festival was coming to town next week. "If you want to do something... Let's go to the festival next week" I opened my eyes. "There'll be fireworks. And games, from what I've heard"
His smile attached from ear to ear. The most excitement on his face I've seen yet. "Yeah! Sounds like fun"
I smiled to myself, closing my eyes and letting the smell of him calm me into sleep.
