The summer was nearly here. The flowers were beginning to bloom, the leaves were just becoming green, the freshness of the air was renewed. One would think it was a good part of the year, one full of excitement for the end of the school year and an entire summer of fun, but that wasn't the case for me. I was a senior, my last year of high school was coming to a close and while I enjoyed the idea of attending university, getting a job, and becoming an adult free in the world, my thoughts were only on Tatsuma.
For about a few weeks I've been calling Yuki by his birth name, Tatsuma. The feeling of awkwardness still never gets old, especially when we're in school. Yuki played it off as a little job, that he gave everyone the wrong name at the beginning of the school year to fool everyone. Not that anyone would have ever noticed if not for that incident with his uncle. Yuki was a fairly popular name for both boys and girls. A perfectly unisex name. Even so, that awkwardness never failed whenever I'd mention his real name. It just didn't seem to fit his imagine, but he didn't seem to care about which name we used.
Drew had been hard at work, though. That American managed to get a job faster than I did, which wasn't really surprising considering I never actually tried to get a job or anything like that, but it was still damn impressive. I didn't even think he could get a job not being a citizen of Japan, but apparently that was fine. He was also working hard with his studies. Sure there was the language gap, but he made due with it. Despite how well he understands and speaks Japanese, he's not that great at reading it. Much like someone else I know.
As for Kioko, she's been trying to get into sports but her school is very limited to her selection. Her only two options are martial arts and archery, which she wants no part of. She wants to play baseball. A few weeks ago she started going to the batting cages and arcade down the street to practice, occasionally bringing my boyfriend along even though he has no interest in the game. But lucky for her she managed to find a guy who attended the batting cages regularly and they really hit it off. The strange thing is they met only after she hit a ball straight into the back of his head.
I looked down at my notebook and sighed. My last assignment was due soon and it had me a bit depressed. Not only was it the last assignment for the year, but for the rest of my high school life and then it was onto university. If I even decided that.
For the time being my thoughts were set in the now. School was going okay for Tatsuma. No one was trying to sleep with him or anything like that, which was good. But I just wasn't sure what would happen after I left. Would people still leave him alone? Was he finally confident enough to fend for himself? I just didn't know and that made me nervous.
"Could you stop?" Drew demanded from his side of the room.
Ever since the first night Tatsuma and I shared a room Ayase has refused to let us be alone behind closed doors.
I looked over at him. "Stop doing what?"
"Tapping your pencil. It's annoying"
"I'm not tapping" that was an obvious lie. Even I knew I was tapping away. "What are you doing anyway?"
He glared at me. "It's a science assignment due for a final grade. What are you doing?"
"A closing speech for my writers class. We have to present a speech since we're graduating. I guess the best one gets to speak at the assembly or something"
"Doesn't the kid with the highest grades do that?"
"Yeah, I guess, but more than one person can make a speech. Personally, I don't care much for it, but a lot of people take it very seriously"
Slowly Drew's glare was fading. "So what are you doing after highschool? Are you going to college and getting a degree?"
I shrugged. "Dunno. I don't honestly think I have the grades for a good university. There isn't anything, in particular, I want to do with my life"
