I shouldn't have slept so soundly.
I shouldn't have allowed myself to believe he was safe, left to his own devices.
And I definitely shouldn't have let the nurse on duty take the night off.
Because of all nights, he chose this one to get out of bed.
Of course he didn't make it past the length of his bed before he collapsed and caused his heart monitor to go berserk with mechanical noises. But he set back his recovery time by a whole nine yards and I couldn't help but be angry at him.
"What the actual fuck is wrong with you?" was the first thing out of my mouth as I ran to his side.
He tried to answer me but all that came out was a gurgle of blood.
He didn't just set back his recovery a whole nine yards, he went back to point one.
Luckily that was the moment a doctor busted through the doors.
I never slept again for the duration of his stay at the hospital.
