JAKE

I ran to pre-cal right after the bell rang. I wanted to see if Nick had already gotten to Paisley and if he had already done his step one; walk the girl to class.

I take a seat at the back of the room, hoping no one would see me focusing at the door.

And Paisley.

Thoughts immediately race through my head as her image appears in the vicinity of my mind.

Why do I care so much about her?

Why do I want to protect her?

Why do I want to get to know more about her?

Why-

"Hey Jake, I didn't see you last night," Anna snaps me back to reality with her flirty voice, along with a wink.

I let out a sigh of annoyance. "I'm just extremely tired and stressed out. You know, with school and all."

"School just started. Actually this is our first day," she says in a matter-of-factly way.

She takes a seat beside me which irritates me and makes me want to sit at the front. Anything to get away from her.

Anna is a girl who you fuck. The one girl who will do anything to get into your bed or your pants, either way, it works. Every. Damn. Time. This one time she came to my house with a trench coat with nothing on underneath. What could've I done? If you put an eighteen-year-old guy with a very much naked girl... Well you get the drift.

"Uh hello babe? Are you even listening?" Anna's irritating high pitched voice breaks me out of my thoughts.

"Look Anna," I start. "What we had was amazing... But all we had was a bed. That's it and that's all it'll ever be. Sex. But we're done now," I say blatantly.

She scrunches her nose and gives me a confused look. "Are you fucking serious?" I nod slowly. "You'll regret this, you'll miss me and you'll come crawling back!" She exclaims.

I shrug and give her a smirk, as she rolls her eyes and walks away quickly.

I face the door again, hoping Paisley will walk in, without Nick.

And just like that, it seems like the heavens above heard my thoughts because right on cue, Paisley walks in. I watch her attentively, looking for any signs of Nick but hoping I won't find him.

Happily, I don't.

Paisley looks me right in the eyes and the dumbass piece of shit that I am, I don't look away but surprisingly, she doesn't either.

We look at each other for approximately twenty seconds until she breaks out of my gaze. The action somehow disappoints me and I have no idea why.

I'm still staring at her, watching her closely, concentrating on every move she makes. I can tell she's looking for a seat or someone to sit beside because her eyes are roaming around the room like a lost little puppy.

I decide to end her misery.

"Paisley, sit beside me," I say, loud enough for her to hear.

The whole entire class looks at me with baffled faces as I'm looking at Paisley.

I block out the rest of the world and all I focus on is her.

PAISLEY

Why did he just ask me to sit beside him? I thought we hate each other?

But for some reason, I walk past the confused strangers and take the seat beside him. I take out my notebook and drop my bag onto the floor. As I'm doing this, I can feel Jake's eyes on me, watching me. I face Jake with my brows furrowed, confusion written all over my face.

"Why did you ask me to sit with you?"

"You looked like a lost little puppy. I decided to help you out," he smirks at me.

His words cause an embarrassing snort escape my lips and roll my eyes. "Are you serious?"

"Dead serious," he says, and winks at me.

"You're an idiot," I tease, a hint of seriousness behind my words.

"And you're a sad girl," he says jokingly.

"You need to let that go," I say, seriously.

"I didn't-"

"Hello class, sorry I'm late, I had other things to do than be in this class with all of you guys," an old woman says with no expression in her voice.

A girl at the front raises her hand. The old woman points at her. "There's a new student here, shouldn't she introduce herself?" The girl says, as I tense up at the thought.

"Yes Anna, that sounds reasonable," the old woman agrees.

I roll my eyes and stand up immediately. I walk to the front of the room and face the class, before she calls me up to the front.

"My name is Paisley Archer, I just moved here and I don't really know why I have to tell you about myself, it's not like each and every one of you shared things about yourself when you were all new to high school. This isn't grade six," I say bluntly and walk back to my seat.

I hear a series of gasps and whispers as I take my seat. Jake is looking at me with one eyebrow raised, amusement lighting up in his eyes.

"What?"

He shakes his head, and gives me a holding-back-laughter smile. "Nothing. Nothing at all," he looks at the front of the room, his annoying smile never leaving his face.

"Everyone quiet!" The old woman demands, which causes me to jump up in my seat. "That was quite an introduction Ms. Archer, I'm quite impressed but I will not allow that kind of behaviour in my classroom. This will be your first and last warning. Understand?"

I nod slowly.

"Good. Now that that's cleared up, I'm Ms. Arlington, and you're stuck with me for the rest of the semester like I am with you."

I give her a lopsided grin and a slow nod.

"You're stuck with me too," Jake whispers in my ear, his breath causing goosebumps on my skin.

And just as fast he was there, he was gone.

I'm suddenly feeling at loss.

Why are you affected by him?

Stop it Paisley, get your head out of your ass! It's not a hat.

Ms. Arlington starts writing numerous numbers on the board, everything looking so unfamiliar to my eyes.

Why did I take pre-cal?
