Eight Years Later
“Daddy, Daddy,” our daughter, Grace, said excitedly pulling on Danny’s pant leg. Grace looked just like Danny; light brown hair, blue eyes, the cutest dimples, and the same little smile.
“Yes, love,” he replied crouching down to her level. It was really cute how much he loved her. Neither of us could’ve ever imagined loving such a little person as much as we love Grace.
“When does the party start?” she asked excitedly. Today was her sixth birthday. We were having a party in our backyard for her with our friends and her classmates from school. Her birthday was in the late spring, which was perfect because we now had pool. Danny had planned Asking Alexandria’s touring schedule so he would be home today. They were playing a show tonight and Grace was really excited about it. I no longer toured with AA because I needed to stay home and take care of Grace. While I missed touring, she was totally worth it.
Danny chuckled. “At one and it’s 12:45 now so very soon, Gracey,” he answered. Gracey was his special nickname for her and she loved it. He kissed her forehead and stood back up just as there was a knock at the door. “There you go, love. Let’s go get the door,” Danny told her and they went to go answer the door.
About an hour, all of Grace’s classmates were swimming in our pool. Most of the parents had stayed, which I thankful for. Fifteen kindergardeners were not our thing. We were lucky Grace was still alive even though it was like she had five fathers.
I suddenly felt a pair of arms snake around my waist as I bobbed my head to the music that Grace had picked out. I had let her pick anything from our CD collection which ending up being every Asking Alexandria album. We had gotten her into metal pretty early. I guess she was just used to it since she had already been to multiple AA concerts. Right now ‘Not The American Average’ was playing, which was causing some funny looks from the parents. We thought nothing of it so it hadn’t even occurred to me that other parents might dislike it. Most of it went right over the kids heads anyway.
Danny suddenly started to sing in my ear, “Come on baby keep it down. Honey hush your lips,” he started but was cut off by one of the parents.
“Are you Grace’s parents?” the mother asked. She had a disgusted look on her face. I couldn’t tell if was because of the music selection or the way we looked. Last time we picked Grace up from school, most of the parents took one look at our tattoos and thought we were the worst parents in the world.
“Yep,” Danny responded resting his head on mine. The parent’s face quickly changed from disgust to confusion. Most people are confused about our British accents. Grace doesn’t have one because she grew up in Texas. She used to a slight accent from hearing us talk, but as soon as she want to school it went away and it confuses people. It doesn’t seem to cross their minds that we may have moved here before Grace was born.
“What is this music?” the parent asked. I didn’t have to look at Danny to know he was trying not to laugh. He never got embarrassed by insults. He simply laughed them off and told the person that at least he was doing something with his life.
“It’s what Grace picked,” I explained hoping she would understand. I mean, it was Grace’s birthday and I just wanted her to be happy.
“You let your six year old listen to this?” the mother questioned putting back the look of disgust on her face. God, people were judgmental.
“I think it’s only right considering this is my band,” Danny responded with a chuckle. The lady gave us both another look before walking away. It looked like she was trying to process what Danny had told her. Everyone was like that. Not just parents. Grace’s teachers were like that. If we went out, people would look at us because of our tattoos. I had gotten used to it, but I still wished people were more openminded about things like tattoos and piercings. I wanted people to accept me, but that never happened.
After cake and presents, everyone started to pile out, which was good considering the concert started at seven tonight and the guys needed to head to the venue to do soundcheck. As we drove to the venue in their tour bus, Grace rambled on about all the fun she had and Danny listened happily. I smiled at them and look around the bus. Danny had taped some of Grace’s drawings to the cabinets. There was one of Danny, Ben, James, Sam, and Cameron with the Asking Alexandria logo drawn below. None of them had necks and their fingers were bigger than their hands. I had to smile at the drawing. She loved to draw. There was another one of Danny, her, and me and another one of a large flower. Before she was born, this bus had looked like your normal tour bus for your normal rock band and now you could tell someone was a father on this bus.
We soon pulled up to the venue and the guys hurried into start soundcheck. I took Grace’s tiny hand in mine and we walked in behind them. We stood in the middle of the floor and she watched intently as they tested their instruments and microphones. I was reminded of the times I would stand at the barricades every night and watch the same thing and every so often Danny would blow me a kiss or stick his tongue out at me. We had been so young back then. Even though I wouldn’t trade Grace for the world, I sort of missed those days. It was rough with Danny on the road without us. I liked when I got to see him everyday and wake up in his arms. I looked at Grace and felt a smile form on my lips. Despite the sacrifices we made for her, I loved her with all my heart.
After a while, we headed backstage and the doors were opened. “Excited for the show, Grace?” Ben asked sitting down on the couch in the green room. He looked down at her with loving eyes. Ben and Sam were Grace’s godparents and definitely loved her.
“Yes!” she exclaimed happily. A huge grin spread across her face. She loved seeing Danny and the rest of the guys on stage. To be honest, I think she was more excited about this than her actual party.
Soon, the show started and we made our way to the side of the stage to watch. Grace obviously couldn’t see in the crowd since she was so short and it was way more safe for her up on the stage.
It was about half way through the show when Danny said something that made Grace’s eyes light up. “So, today’s my daughter’s birthday,” Danny announced to the crowd. He gestured for her to come on stage and she happily ran up to him. He picked her up. She was still at that size where we could pick her up without breaking our backs. “Everyone say ‘hi Grace,’” Danny instructed and the crowd roared their welcome back at her. “So, can we sing her Happy Birthday?” he asked when they had quieted down.
With in a few minutes everyone erupted in a chant of Happy Birthday. I quickly pulled out my phone so I could recored it. It was literally one of the cutest things ever. She was grinned from ear to ear. She definitely liked being the center of attention. After the crowd quieted down, she gave him a kiss, which was another adorably cute moment, and he set her down on the floor. She came running back to happily and the guys finished the show.
After the encore, we made our way back to the bus. Danny had picked up Grace. She yawn and rested her little head on his shoulder. It was way past her bed time, but it was a special occasion, so I didn’t care. “I love you, Daddy,” she told him before her tiny little eyes closed and she fell asleep. I felt myself smile at the scene.
“I love you, too, Gracey,” he responded even though she was fast asleep. I seriously couldn’t ask for a better father for my daughter. He loved her more than anything and I hope that never changes.
