Leland sat down in the chair next to Shanee's hospital bed. He looked upon the face of the woman he loved, and a tear escaped his eye. He could see that she was sweating profusely. He looked over and saw that there was a towel lying on the stand next to her bed and picked it up and blotted her forehead. Just then, he saw her head move slightly.
"Shanee? Sweetheart, please just open your eyes," he said in a pleading tone, but she stopped moving. Her still body was a bad sign and thought about what he could do to persuade her to wake up.
He decided he needed to try something different, so he opened his mouth to sing. She had always loved his voice, and she once told him that it was one of the reasons that she fell in love with him. His voice was soft, choosing a song he had written for her when they first met. The song he sang to her was Sweet Serenity. It was her favorite, and if any song could coax her awake it was that one. Since their parting, he hadn't dared listened to Gavin's recording of the song or even dared play it on his own, until the night before when Zorell stumbled across the record and insisted on playing it.
He sang it to her in a quiet, sweet voice. He only stopped when he noticed that her head moved and her eyes slowly opened. Tears filled his eyes as she tried to focus on his face. It seemed like she didn't recognize her at first.
"Lee," she whispered, while struggling to get the word out. He lifted up her hand to kiss it. He was so filled with emotion that he couldn't talk. "No," she said and moved her head back and forth slowly. He was trying to sooth her, but she seemed frightened and confused. "This is a dream." She forced the words, struggling to speak. Her breathing was clearly labored, which gave Leland cause to worry.
"No, my darling, I'm here," he said and tried to reassure her, but she pushed him away from her.
"You... can't... be... my Leland," she said breathing heavily between words. "He would never come back to me, not after I..." her words trailed off, and she was too weak to go on.
"I know what happened," he said as he caressed her hair. "My father tried to split us up, but that's over now. I love you, Shanee, and I know you love me."
"I love you, Lee, but you're just a dream," she said and closed her eyes. "Just a dream..." It was the last thing she said, before slipping back into unconsciousness.
"Shanee! Shanee! Please, wake up, I'm here. I'm real." He pleaded with her that he was telling the truth, but once again her body was still. He looked around trying to find some help, but there was none to be found. He rose to his feet and kissed her hand before he left. He walked quickly out of the hospital room looking for someone to help him.
He practically ran to the nurses' station and found the head nurse, a woman he learned was known as Nurse Strauser. She was the one who had kicked him out the night before. It was only because visiting hours were over, but still, he didn't want to leave Shanee.
