The atmosphere was more than a little tense. Nobody had any idea what had happened. We had just heard a scream and saw Mr. Morix...
Nurse Toshi came walking out of the room Cotoli was currently in. She closed the door behind her quietly. "He should be okay. He's still asleep, though he keeps whispering things," Nurse Toshi said.
"What sort of things is he saying?" Mr. Wood asked.
"He keeps whispering about a rabbit and a knife. I'm not sure what he's saying, though I keep hearing him say something else..." Nurse Toshi told us, staring off into space at the end.
"What else is he saying? It could be important to the case," I said.
"He's also saying something about birthdays..." Nurse Toshi finished. She shook her head. "I don't know what it could be about, though it's okay if you want to go listen to what he's saying."
I nodded and walked into Mr. Morix's room. He was lying on the bed in the center of the room. He looked pale as far as I could tell. I suppose that made sense since he had just been... He had just been...
"I-it... Should have been... Happy..." I heard him whisper. He was turning desperately in his sleep. I guessed that he was having a nightmare.
I took a seat in a chair next to his bed and began to stroke his arm. "No need to stress yourself out... It's okay..."
"I-I lost... Your... Toy..." Mr. Morix murmured next. He looked more than a little restless.
"He must be talking about the rabbit toy," I deduced. "Maybe he was borrowing it and he lost it because... Wait. Where is the rabbit toy? We haven't seen it since he ran away from the courtroom earlier today..."
"I thought that he would have it with him no matter what... But it looks like it's gone. If it isn't with him or at the crime scene, then somebody must have taken it from him," Pandora declared. "But... Who would take a rabbit toy? It seems like something you could find anywhere... There isn't reason to take it."
"I bet that the real culprit found out that we knew about the toy. They must have attacked Mr. Morix to get it back," Prosecutor Yang suggested.
"I guess this means that our assumptions about the rabbit toy were correct. It must have some sort of evidence hidden inside of it. Evidence left by the culprit," I said.
Before we could think into this any further, Mr. Morix sat up in his bed. He was breathing heavily and holding his injured stomach. "W-where am I...?!" Mr. Morix whispered in distress. "What's going on...?!"
"Calm down. You're safe. You're at the hospital right now recovering from your attack," Prosecutor Yang told him.
"You have no need to panic. We won't let anybody hurt you, alright?" I asked.
Mr. Morix nodded slowly before laying back down. "If you're so sure... I guess that I'm okay... I don't want to get hurt anymore..."
"If you're okay with talking about it, could you tell us what happened?" I questioned.
"The culprit... He... He attacked me..." Mr. Morix whispered feverishly. "I thought he was gone... But he Isn't... Don't let him come back!!"
I flinched as Nurse Toshi made her way to his side. She stroked his face gently. "It's okay... Nothing will happen to you while we're here, alright?"
Mr. Morix nodded. "Okay..."
"While you were asleep, you were talking about birthdays, knives, and rabbits. Do you know what this is all about?" Mr. Wood asked.
"Well... I missed my friend's birthday... And I can't go to see her because I'm here..." Mr. Morix began.
"What about the rabbit toy? We haven't seen it in a while," I commented.
"The rabbit toy... The culprit... The one who attacked me... He stole the rabbit toy. He had something inside of it, I bet... So he had to take it so that he wouldn't be arrested for a crime..." Mr. Morix answered.
Prosecutor Yang, who had been shuffling through his evidence, frowned. "The knife... The weapon used in the crime... It's gone," he said solemnly.
"The culprit took it. I saw it on his belt. It was one of the last things I saw before blacking out. He stole the knife, I guess," Mr. Morix whispered.
"What's this about a missing knife?"
Mr. Morix squealed and hid behind me as Detective Erikson entered the room. He was holding the knife, in its plastic bag, as he approached us. "I found it in the hallway," the detective explained.
"I was keeping it before now, so I guess that the culprit stole it and tried to take it with him, though he dropped it," Prosecutor Yang said. "He sure did do it well... I didn't even notice that I was missing it until now."
"Really? That sure is a great thief," Pandora commented.
"Regardless of that, I think that we should return to the crime scene. I know that Mr. Morix will need a little bit more time to rest and recover. We can ask who the culprit is when he's feeling up to it," I said.
"That seems like a good idea," Prosecutor Yang agreed.
"But we need to find out who the culprit is as soon as possible," Mr. Wood retorted.
"I will see to his recovery. Feel free to go. I'll call you when he's ready to talk to you," Nurse Toshi told us.
Mr. Wood sighed and nodded. He walked out of the room, Detective Erikson, Prosecutor Yang, Pandora, and I following him out.
